Taper makes me think

Today I was on the phone with a friend and they asked, “What’s the good word?” The good word is taper.  For all those who don’t know, taper happens close to a race where you scale back your mileage so you can rest up and recover for the race.  Taper is a good and bad thing.  It’s good because I won’t be running mega miles on the weekend but it bad because I’m not focused on running the mega mileage on the weekend.  It leaves room to think about other things.

The thing that’s been on my mind lately is my hair. When I was larger I had really great hair. When I started my workout regime I had to sacrifice my hair. It kind of makes me sad because I was madly in love with my hair. Being a black woman it’s hard to keep my hair up because I end up sweating it out every day. I made a choice to not get my hair done…and I miss it. Occasionally, I do get the chance to get my hair done and I’ve decided I don’t take enough time for that. Remember my after race treat in Philly?

Got my hair did! Feel so much better now after running #rnrphilly
I felt like a million bucks after visiting that place in Philly! I need to make time for more things like this…and maybe take some friends along with me.

So colorful! #dinner #veggies #corn #healthyeats #fresh
Next up is food! Taper has been making me focus on my food choices. As you know, we are trying to cook more food at home and I’ve been so focused on the health benefits of food. I’ve reignited my love with quinoa, leafy greens and all other veggies. I’ve been scouring the internet for good recipes and Willie and I have been cooking up good stuff in the kitchen.

Lastly, I’ve been thinking about toning up!  I think the lose skin thing is starting to get to me around my stomach.  I’m really ready for that stuff to tone up like my arms and almost my thighs.  People always wondered about the loose skin…it’s there and it kind of gets in the way sometimes.  BUT it doesn’t bother me that much.  It does make me think about doing core workouts though.  I know a lot of people are doing plank challenges and such.  Have you seen the show on Bravo called “Toned Up”? It’s a really good show and they offer little tips about toning.  I didn’t think I was going to like it, but I did! The girls are a little flighty but the seems to have a good handle on their business.

What’s on your mind today?

Break out of the holiday rut

Break out of the holiday rut

There’s still one big event left in the holiday season but you can break out of the holiday rut now.  Christmas cookies have been consumed and that holiday meal is behind us.  It’s time to get active and burn off those holiday calories.  How exactly can you break out of the holiday rut? Here are some of my suggestions: 1. Just suck it up and work out.  The good thing about being a fitness instructor is I have no choice but to jump right back into the swing of things so I had no problem with it.  I promise if…

Christmas is over…

Christmas is over…

Christmas was pretty chill for us. We agreed to keep the gift giving to a minimum because we tend to go overboard. I got Willie a head light, Clif Bars and a cold weather pull over. He got me a BOX of Quest Bars and some chap stick. I’m a happy girl. I also got some airline giftcards (cause you know I’m always moving)!  I’m planning out 2014 as I type this…lots of travel to be happening I hope! We went to my sister’s house for Christmas. I wanted to get a good picture by the tree and Willie though…

After the marathon…

After the marathon…

You know what?  It’s super hard for me not to run.  I know I needed to take the days off but I really just wanted to run and I had already built up this serious running thing.  I had to take a few days off which is fine because I still had to teach my cycle classes. I need to take it easy and not hurt myself. I think people always forget about recovery! After the marathon I thought I would be hurting but I’m not.  I’m having a little ache in my knees but that’s due to not stretching…

Challenge: I CAN…Be Active

Challenge: I CAN…Be Active

It’s that time of year again when people say they are busy but aren’t too busy to eat. The holidays are about spending time with family and friends and buying gifts, so why not give yourself a gift? The holidays are filled with treats and great food so practice moderation with those foods. BUT I’m also asking you to get active! My best friend Mandie has already jumped on the challenge and she’s been working out to shed some pounds and just get an active lifestyle. Why can’t you do the same over the holiday season? There’s A LOT of…

Six reasons to exercise

Six reasons to exercise

I was thinking about some of the reason I like to workout. It’s not just running folks, I like to do other things too. This was the perfect time to talk about a few reasons to exercise and get on the road to an active lifestyle. 1. We all need to live an active lifestyle.  It’s about getting up and getting moving.  Want to lose the weight? The best way to start is just to get moving. 2. It makes you happy. People have commented on my cheery disposition and I have to say, it’s all due to exercise.  I…

The incident of accountability

The incident of accountability

Willie and I both talk about accountability being a reason why our weight loss journey was successful. We do hold each other accountable to keep each other in check. Accountability partners are great because they keep you moving in the right direction, but it’s all fun and games until you actually have to hold the other person accountable. There was an incident of accountability with running going on in our house. Willie and I are both training for St. Jude Children’s Marathon weekend. I’m running the full marathon and he’s running the half marathon. I printed out the training plans…

Long run and The Rachael Ray Show Updates

Long run and The Rachael Ray Show Updates

Happy Saturday! This morning I tackled my first 13.1 in a non race situation. Alls I can say is, it didn’t go as horrible wrong as my Tuesday run so it was a success. And I ran it without music so this was how focused I was on running this run to it’s end. The fun felt good and that’s all I could ask for but I guess I was running slower but steady in the humidity. I don’t have any complaints at all! Plus, I got to sport my new CEP night view compression socks. I got them at…

Don’t give up even if it’s …

Don’t give up even if it’s hard to continue

I’ve had rough start to the week and my mind has been playing tricks on me. If you didn’t know, I’ve been taking swimming lessons because I have this crazy idea of becoming a triathlete. I like to run and I LOVE my bike, but I can’t swim very well. Let me be honest, I thought I could swim a little bit but I was wrong. On Monday I had a swimming lesson and I got frustrated with myself. My mind was already NOT there concentrating on the pool and I had previously ran 3 miles and rushed off to…
