Five things: Weight Loss Edition

Happy Friday everyone!  It’s been a long week but I’m glad I made it to Friday.  The bad news is our air conditioning is on the fritz so it’s hotter than biscuits in our house.

This is what happens when you're AC goes out I'm Texas in the summer. #screwed #hot #hotterthanbiscuits

I had to get some AC is out provisions.  Hopefully, the unit will be fixed today but I’m skeptical.

Anyway, I wanted to start doing the Friday Five thing but with a twist…with some helpful information for people so this week’s topic will be weight loss.

Weight loss

1. Weight loss is a process.  It’s not going to happen overnight so be patient.  It always helps if you start with a plan and make those appointments with yourself to work out.

2. You can’t out work a BAD DIET!  You’re working out to lose weight so don’t try to justify your working out by still eating bad.  You can’t lose weight without getting active and changing your eating habits.  It’s a one two punch. Just because you worked out for 2 hours, doesn’t justify eating back all those calories and fats…plus some.  It doesn’t work like that my friends.  Try the 80/20 rule: eating right 80% of time could make a big difference.

3. Log your food.  If you are logging your food, you’re really seeing what you’re eating.  You’re paying attention to calories and portion size. It’s all about portion control.  But don’t ignore all your other macros too.  Getting in the right fats, carbs and proteins and all that other stuff is important too.

4. Learn to read a nutrition label.  There’s so much information there that you should know how to read.  Pay attention to what is in your food, pay attention to what a portion size really is and pay attention to the macro make up.  Food is our fuel and you don’t want to eat empty calories because you’ll just end up eating more.

5. Weight/strength workouts are just as important as cardio.  Those are workouts that aren’t always everyone’s thing because they feel like they aren’t burning the calories they need.  Weight training isn’t as flashy as cardio but it’s something you need to get in.  As you gain muscle, your body will burn calories more efficiently and that will definitely help with losing weight.

Are you on a weight loss journey?  How far are you in your journey?

Summer hydration safety

Summer hydration safety

I have some lofty goals for this summer that I know I won’t be able to accomplish unless I focus on hydration. Hydration is an important part of daily life AND to those who are on a weight loss journey. Drinking water helps your metabolism which is something we are all trying to achieve, right? *Yes, I know I spent a lot of time talking about Nuun in this post. There is no compensation happening here. It’s just a product I love and use on a regular basis. It’s definitely apart of my daily routine. I can tell you all…

Blog interrupted: a new week reset, going meatless, and biking.

I like to post the motivational stuff on Monday’s because it’s just a good way to start off the week but I’ve fallen behind on blogging because I was sick and I didn’t want to go anywhere near a computer on my work planning day. It’s kind of been a mess. I’m yet to post my recaps from San Diego or any other blog planning so this is where I’m at. The good this though is it’s Monday, a new week to do new things! It’s time to start anew and achieve new things! It’s time to start a fresh…

Fitbit Flex (and Just Dance) has me getting active again

I have a love/hate relationship with my Fitbit Flex. After Fitbloggin’ last year, I decided to get a Fitbit to help me monitor my steps and sleep patterns. Little did I know, I was going to go through three Fitbits in less than a year and these things aren’t cheap. In April, my Fitbit Flex died again on the charger and I missed it but I wasn’t going to go through the hassle of getting a replacement. FYI: Fitbit support has been very helpful in providing me replacements. It is still frustrating having this thing go out on me all of…

I taught a wonderful class this morning and then immediately went home ate and got in the car. Someone asked why I posted pictures of my workouts every day.  I’m not doing it for any other reason so that you can hold me…

Bringing back the two-a-days and other things

Bringing back the two-a-days and other things

Willie is on a mission to remind me I’m just a few days done from the 50K! I have some aches and pains and he’s on my butt about giving it time. You know what I say to that? Yep! That’s right. It’s the time of year when it’s getting hotter outside and the nearby races are coming to an end. That means one of two things. 1. I need to start traveling or 2. I’m going to have to hit the streets and run. I’m going to Kentucky in two weeks though and then California at the end of…

Weight loss and changing your routine

Weight loss and changing your routine

Weight loss has been a big subject in our house again.  Willie is trying to drop some pounds and is going back to the methods.  That means we’ve been talking about it much more but I guess more about what happens after weight loss. It’s been on my mind about the struggles, the fears, the pay off…everything that has come along with it.  The biggest thing we’ve been talking about is changing up the workouts.  It’s easy to get wrapped up in doing something that you like to do but it’s important to change up your workouts.  The body responds…

Break out of the workout rut

Break out of the workout rut

Hello gym workout rutt. I don’t know what’s been going on but lately I’ve been less than thrilled with my workouts. It’s been pretty rough so I’ve been trying to change some things up. Going through a rut is to be expected, right? We’ve been going to the same gym for three years now so it’s probably only natural to feel the “been there, done that feeling” we’ve both been experiencing. I know we’re not the only ones who feel that way. The past couple of weeks I’ve been trying to limit my gym time and try some other things…

Not running all the marathons

Not running all the marathons

Last week I was prepping all week to run The Austin Marathon. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy or fast but I just wanted to run it. I kept referring to the weekend as a “shit show” but I was really excited for it. As excited that I was to run that marathon, I knew I probably shouldn’t. It nagged at me all week which made me really think about the situation. Running the marathons is fun and I love to do it. But it is incredibly taxing on the body and probably not something I need to…

Exercising is the LEAST offensive thing I’ve done to my body

A study by the American College of Cardiology came out suggesting the amount I run will increase my chance of death but it’s at the same rate of people who sit on the couch. The National guideline suggests 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. For me, this isn’t a big deal. Teaching two of my classes is 90 minutes and we all know I work out more than that. I haven’t even made a dent into the 150 minutes with running. But even if I wasn’t running, would more than 150 mins of exercising be harmful to my health?…
