What did you eat to lose all that weight?

This week I’m taking the time to answer the many e-mails I get about our weight loss journey.  Most of the questions are the same, but this question is the most frequently asked question.  Before I venture any more into this subject, I want to remind everyone that it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change.  Also, there wasn’t one magic food that changed our lives and helped us drop the weight.  The weight didn’t come off overnight because it was a process.

Lunch! Loaded with sodium but I take what I can get! #chipotle

The easiest way to answer this question is to tell you what we stopped eating.  We stopped eating fast food.  There was no more McDonald’s, Burger King, Jack in the Box, Chicken Express, Taco Bell, etc and we haven’t really eaten at those places in years now. When we travel we eat a lot of Subway salads, Which Wich and Chipotle or places like that.  Why those places? Because they tend to take a fresher approach to food and yes deli meats are processed but when you’re traveling your options are limited and sometimes just just have to make it work.

The biggest change in our lifestyle was we stopped eating out and started cooking more at home.  This was a learning process.  There are things we ate at the beginning of our journey that we wouldn’t eat now.  The most important thing to do is educate yourself on what’s healthy and what’s not.  Cooking at home is great because you know what is going into your food and you don’t really have to worry about the amount of oil or whatever else in your food! BUT you need to educate yourself on healthy meal prep.  Make sure you’re eating the correct serving sizes, eating a balanced plate and your plate is colorful.  Those colors are important because you’re getting the nutrients you need for a healthy balanced diet.

I’ve learned that I was eating too much meat.  A standard portion size of meat is 4oz and when I really took a look at the amount of meat I was eating, most times I was eating double or triple the amount in one serving.  That’s why investing in a food scale and measuring cups was the best investment for us!  If you’re making a lifestyle change, these food measuring items will be the greatest assets you’ll ever use.

Try different veggies because I’ve grown to love veggies I’ve hated in the past.  Instead of going back for seconds on meat now, I’m more than likely to go back for seconds on those veggies and I don’t feel bad about that AT ALL.  Willie didn’t like veggies at all, but now he’s gotten way better about them.  Most people don’t like a veggie because it wasn’t presented to them in a likable fashion so do a change up and try something new in a new way.

You’re probably wanting me to get to a list of foods that we do eat, right?

We eat lean meats: turkey, skinless chicken breast, skinless chicken thighs, fish: salmon, tilapia, snapper and we’ve just started with pork again.  It’s the other white meat after all.

Lots of veggies: kale, broccoli, squash, green beans, bell peppers…there are just too many to list.  There are very few veggies we don’t eat.

Fruits: everything.  More than half of our grocery bill is for produce.

Also, we eat quinoa, lentils, black beans, chickpeas, wild rice, barley, bulgar wheat…we eat oatmeal and egg whites every morning. There is plenty of yogurt in our house too.

The best advice I can offer you is this: find foods that you like and find new ways to enjoy them. Also, try to cook at home as much as you can. I know it’s sometimes impossible to do this every day but do it as much as possible. Eat fresh foods and whole foods when you can. I really feel like it’s impossible not to eat processed foods so yes I do have a frozen meal every day for lunch. I’ve had one almost every day since we started our lifestyle journey and I still lost the weight and I’m healthy. There just isn’t enough time in the day to prepare all those meals. Most importantly, research and don’t be afraid to try new things. It’s worth it in the end! Also, go back and read my grocery shopping tips too!

So what’s your favorite veggie and how do you like it prepared?

Do you reward yourself with food? Stop it!

Do you reward yourself with food? Stop it!

If you answered yes, let’s stop this bad habit.  When I was heavier, food was always apart of the celebration.  Had the best day of my life? I had ice cream because I deserved it.  It’s my birthday or Willie’s birthday or my cousin’s twice removed birthday; let’s chow down.  Got a pay bump?  Let’s spend that extra money on a really decadent meal that will leave me knocked out later. Food is used as a celebratory manner in our lives, but does it always have to be that way. I even fall victim to it now.  I run a…

Happy Halloween! Is it all about candy?

Happy Halloween! Is it all about candy?

It’s the day that we all loved as kids because we could dress up like anything and get free candy for it!  And of course, there are the pumpkins.  Children get so excited about pumpkins and most adults don’t enjoy the carving process.  I wonder if it’s because it’s too messy or just too time consuming? Last Saturday, we took our god daughter to the pumpkin patch. She was running around that place so fast and having the time of her life, even though there weren’t many pumpkins left. That’s understandable though because Halloween was very near. She is all…

Six reasons to exercise

Six reasons to exercise

I was thinking about some of the reason I like to workout. It’s not just running folks, I like to do other things too. This was the perfect time to talk about a few reasons to exercise and get on the road to an active lifestyle. 1. We all need to live an active lifestyle.  It’s about getting up and getting moving.  Want to lose the weight? The best way to start is just to get moving. 2. It makes you happy. People have commented on my cheery disposition and I have to say, it’s all due to exercise.  I…

It’s National Oatmeal Day

It’s National Oatmeal Day

I don’t know about you but I love oatmeal. In fact, I’ve been eating oatmeal a lot lately. Last week, all I wanted to eat was oatmeal so I proudly shamefully admit I ate oatmeal for dinner last week and tried to do it last night, but Willie stopped me. This is how much I love oatmeal! I had all of these pictures and more on my phone. Most mornings you will see me eating oatmeal. I love steel cut oats, but for time I make overnight oats almost every day. When I’m not eating oatmeal, I’m probably eating pumpkin…

Nothing went as planned this weekend

Nothing went as planned this weekend

I had a pretty uneventful weekend but it should have been eventful.  There was a Halloween party but that was really bust and I was supposed to run a relay with Willie on Sunday but the skies opened up and he didn’t feel comfortable running in the rain.  It was a wash! That was really a shame because we woke up at 4 AM to make it to the race and then it was delayed so we sat around wet for almost 2 hours by the time the race was about to start it was still raining but we were…

Friday Finds: Feeling fat, eating treats and food

Friday Finds: Feeling fat, eating treats and food

I thought I would try something new for the blog.  I usually do a foodie Friday thing but I’ve been lazy and haven’t really been “cooking”.  It’s been more like putting something together fast to eat and moving on.  So this week I would like to share with you some of my favorite posts from around the web this week.  You never know, you might find it interesting too! Here we go: 1.  Gaining the weight back or just eating not so clean sometimes play with my mind like Mario Kart!  It’s not a good feeling and sometimes can be…

Believe in the better version of you

Believe in the better version of you

I was thinking about all the changes that have occurred in my life over the past three years.  I am a much different person than I was back then and I feel like I’ve made a lot of changes for the better.  There are things that I still struggle with, but for the most part I know I’m definitely a healthier, happier and focused person that I was before. I am still the same person, but I’m just a better version of myself. I struggled with depression.  I’m not afraid or ashamed to admit it.  I had a really horrible…

How did I get into running?

How did I get into running?

It’s question and answer time and this week I decided to answer a running question since I’m becoming a crazy runner with all these back to back races.  I’ll be heading out of town for Rock n Roll Denver and I will be running with Got Chocolate Milk Team Refuel.  But the question is: how did you get into running? I started running because walking just wasn’t cutting it for me anymore. I’ve said it many times before but when we first started going to the gym we walked on the treadmill for 30 mins everyday.  Every week we bumped…

Slapdash Tuesday: That rest day should have happened

Slapdash Tuesday: That rest day should have happened

I had a nice post planned out for today but I’m left feeling blah.  It’s probably not blah, just tired.  Yesterday I should have taken a rest day, but I didn’t.  It was just going to be an easy day. I was just going to take the dogs on a walk. I don’t walk them at the same time because they act stupid and like they aren’t trained. I have to take them one at a time. I took Master first and I walked a little over a mile. Then I took Stinkie and walked about a mile and then…

Foodie Friday: My week wasn’t all about the bread

My week wasn’t filled with just bread but the bread was so good.  I spent half of Sunday evening staring at the oven while the bread Willie made me baked. The bread was so delicious and I must admit, last night I sat on the floor at 9:30 pm watching the oven AGAIN as Willie perfected his bread recipe. I wish I could have just eaten bread all week, but I couldn’t. I did enjoy it. It’s fun being a runner in training because I don’t feel bad about eating the bread. I need the carbs, right? I don’t know…
