Tips for gaining focus

I’ll cut the small talk and just be honest, I have been lacking focus. I’m easily distracted and that has really killed my productivity. That’s why things have been lacking here in the blog department. The slightest thing will throw me off course and it’s hard for me to get back on this figurative road. Do you know how many times I’ve jumped off this blog post already? I’ve only typed three sentences.

I decided my office today would be Panera. You know, because it’s easy not to get distracted here. Wrong! Whever my focus has gone, I would like to return now. It’s time for me to go through bootcamp to get things back on track.

It’s only fitting that I share with you some of my tips for gaining focus:

1. Clean up the clutter. This could be the actual physcial clutter in your areas: home, work and car. Sometimes the actual clutter will translate to your overall being and create a chaotic state, even if that state doesn’t really exist. Also, it might be time to clean up some of that mental and emotional clutter. There may be too many things that are left unresolved that are just taking up too much brain space.

2. Reprioritize. Sit down and make a list of priorities so that you know what is important to you at this current time. Priorities change over time and space and that’s ok. This is just a way of realizing what is important to you right this moment. Doing this will give you a tangible thing of things that are important in your life and things that just need to be taken care of.

3. Reset your schedule. It’s time for a reboot. It’s time to reorganize your schedule so you can be productive throughout the day. Do ever have those days that you feel so busy but feel like you have accomplished nothing? That’s what I’m trying to avoid right now. If you’re dedicating your time to something, make sure you make it count. I’m most productive in the morning, I should put my most important tasks in the morning when I work best and the non-important things toward the end of the day when I don’t feel like doing much. I really shouldn’t be scheduling important meetings in the evening or working on major projects after 4pm.

It’s much more than just scheduling when to do something, but blocks of time you should be working on something so you’re not jumping from one task to another without completing the pervious task. It’s time waster! Therefore, it’s important to stick to the schedule so you know how long it takes to complete certain tasks and then you can actually plan out your time.

4. Limit the social media. I don’t know about you, but social media is a big time suck for me. It’s like a rabbit hole. The next thing you know you’ve spent hours looking at nothing on the computer. It sounds funny coming from me because I make half my income from social media, but social media can cripple your day if you don’t use it with some restraint. It’s every easy to get distracted by the many social media outlets out there. Do you really know how much time you’re spending on social media? It’s easy to lose track of it all. Just be a little bit mindful of this and how distracting it can be to your life.

I think my biggest problem with lacking focus is not scheduling a little bit of down time in the day. I never really have a moment to decompress from the long days and I should get better about that. That time is especially important on the busy days when I get bogged down in lots of tasks. Remember, it’s important to make time for yourself.

I really do hope my tips for gaining focus help someone, somwhere out there in the world.  Don’t forget to leave a comment below to let me know.

Are you easily districted? What is the biggest distraction in your life?

#TourdeAngie has begun with my airport food hacks

I had big things planned for the blog this week but then life got really busy.  It was launch week at the gym which is always a great time. But that also means things get really busy with teaching extra classes.  Then my full time job was hectic because I was trying to do 6 days worth of work in 4 days.  The blog and vlog kind of got no attention this week.  Luckily I have some down time in the airport right now between my flights. I first had to eat my salad in the bag.  Why in the…

Don’t skip your exercise warm up.

Don’t skip your exercise warm up.

I do realize a lot of my readers are on their own journeys and don’t know where to begin.  Healthy eating and exercise is something new to you and you don’t know where to begin.  That is why I’m talking to you about the exercise warm up.  I see people go straight hard core into their workouts without any batting an eye on the warm up. The exercise warm-up and cool down are crucial parts of the workout and sadly parts that people don’t really focus on.  Today, I’m only talking about the warm up but don’t worry, I’ll talk…

My mom’s breast cancer is a moment …

My mom’s breast cancer is a moment that changed me

This past weekend I participated in the Gift of Life Color Rush 5k in celebration of my mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2012. It’s not really something I talked about too much because it was hard and difficult. Also, the fact that my mom has cancer wasn’t something we wanted floating around time. There was only one thing that mattered and that she was getting the best treatment. Spoiler alert: my mom is cancer free! It’s a blessing. After spending some time with my mom, I realized I was the reason she got herself checked because…

The end of the Labor Day

The end of the Labor Day

I hope everyone had a great day today and didn’t have to work. If you did have to work, I’m sorry! I wish I could say I did something eventful for the weekend, but I really didn’t do much. This morning I went for a run. The humidity was killer so I stopped to play in the sprinklers. After that, I decided that I should do some laundry. It’s long overdue. @angelabeatfat is recording videos for her YouTube channel. #production #youtube #video #WBF #film A photo posted by Willie Gillis (@fueledxrunning) on Sep 6, 2015 at 12:46pm PDT I just…

Five Things Friday: The mailbox edition

Five Things Friday: The mailbox edition

Sorry for no blog yesterday, I really wasn’t feeling it.  I had a core workout I was going to share with the class, but my heart wasn’t in it. Thursday is usually the day I leave open to talk about life on the blog but it just wasn’t coming to me and putting in a core workout just didn’t seem…right. It was probably just a good day to take a break from blogging. It’s Five Things Friday but I only have one thing to tell you. Today I am here to tell you that I’m reopening the mailbox!  This means I will…

The end of a Friday

The end of a Friday

I should be sleeping right now since I’ll be running 32 miles tomorrow in the heat but I’m not.  I’m up.  I couldn’t stop thinking about posting this blog post. I couldn’t end Friday without it. We drove to outside Austin today.  It was a nice day.  The temperature seems to have calmed a bit and the sun was shining. I just can’t get over how beautiful the day turned out to be.  Makes me want to drive a long way with the windows down and the radio up. We did get stuck in traffic so time was limited.  There…

Be true to yourself

Be true to yourself

Excuse me for a moment while I set the mood. Play the song and read the blog post: I haven’t been true to myself.  I think I’ve been playing.  I’ve been trying a little to hard to be someone that I am not.  At the root of it all, I am still the same person but with some better attributes.  I think I lost myself.  Lately, I’ve found myself unhappy, stressed, confused, indecisive, scattered, negative and unfocused.  I don’t really feel like I’ve been myself this year at all.  I’ve been floundering; I’ve been hiding. It’s time to put an…

Sleep debt: are you suffering?

Sleep debt: are you suffering?

Monday morning, the alarm went off and I hit the snooze button.  Sunday night, I stayed up a little later because I was working on some blog projects and it messed with my routine a bit.  Sunday work, turned into a Monday morning snooze that lasted long enough for me to miss my morning workout.  What’s up with that? Monday afternoon, I start going through my e-mail and find something interesting about sleep deprivation.  Keep in mind, I didn’t think I was sleep deprived because I go to sleep at old lady time.  I’m usually in bed by 9pm if…

Surround yourself with positive people.

Surround yourself with positive people.

Please surround yourself with positive people who see greatness. This is one lesson I have learned this year.  Positive energy is important and situating yourself around people who are doing something will indeed motivate and inspire you to explore things you never thought possible. Just think about it, if you continue living life every day in a negative situation, you will more than likely develop a negative attitude.  The sky will never be blue enough.  The stars will never shine bright enough for you.  The bad days morph into even worse days. This is just one reason to fill your…
