Don’t skip your exercise warm up.

I do realize a lot of my readers are on their own journeys and don’t know where to begin.  Healthy eating and exercise is something new to you and you don’t know where to begin.  That is why I’m talking to you about the exercise warm up.  I see people go straight hard core into their workouts without any batting an eye on the warm up.

The exercise warm-up and cool down are crucial parts of the workout and sadly parts that people don’t really focus on.  Today, I’m only talking about the warm up but don’t worry, I’ll talk to you about the cool down later.

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." Take Mark Twain's words to mind when you're goal setting and goal planning. The hardest part is taking the first step, but it's always worth it. #quoteoftheday #goals #fitfluential #fitness

With the warm up, you are prepping your body for the amazing workout you’re about to do.  The warm up doesn’t have to be related to the exercise you’re about to perform.  For example, you might walk on the treadmill before doing your strength or resistance training. It’s just a way to get your muscles warmed up and ready for the upcoming exercise minutes.

I didn’t always warm up before I started running and it made that first mile very difficult.  Believe me, a warm up before any workout is NECESSARY! Here are some facts about the warm up:

    • Increases the heart rate and respiratory rate.
    • Increases tissue temperature
    • Increase mental readiness for exercise.

Basically a warm up is setting you up not to shock your body so much from a low heart to a sudden elevated heart rate, warms up the muscles and shaking off the dust and lastly, it gets your mind ready to sweat!  Mental readiness is a huge part of a successful workout so don’t skip your warm up for that reason.

Warm up

The warm up should last between 5-10 minutes and should be light to moderate in intensity.  There are many options for warm ups including: foam rolling, walking on the treadmill, riding a stationary bicycle, elliptical, rowing, body weight squats, hip swings, etc.  This can go on and on.  Again, this should be a light activity that gently raises the heart rate and you should NOT reach fatigue during this period.

It’s time to focus a little bit on the fitness aspect of a healthy lifestyle because I feel like this is the most overlooked part of a weight loss journey.  Attention is always paid to what to eat and when to eat but there is very little question about the working out and getting active part of changing your life.  Whenever someone asks me how I lost the weight, I say the same thing: “I stopped eating crap and started getting active.”  Activity is a key part of getting in your caloric deficit for weight loss.

You’re not going to be able to maintain your weight loss without getting in exercise.  That’s the bottom line.  Wrap your mind around it, you’re going to need to exercise to lose weight.  It’s not just about food.

Be honest, do you warm up?

3 Reasons To Listen to Music During Your Workout

3 Reasons To Listen to Music During Your Workout

Listening to music during your workout can work wonders.  If you’re having a bad day, turn on some tunes and get it rolling.  There is nothing wrong with turning up the tunes during your workout and in fact it helps out a bunch. For some reason today, I’ve been in a musical mood. Singing and shaking has been my thing so I just had to share with your some reasons to listen to music during your workout: When you’re listening to music, you’re more inclined to get with the beat.  If the beat is pumping, you’re going to kick in the…

Keep your fitness appointment

Keep your fitness appointment

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I went to visit my best friends to celebrate a very special birthday.  I hadn’t seen them in forever so it was so great.  Sadly, I didn’t get many pictures but I got a few. The key to life is to surround yourself with good people.  I think I’m winning in this department, finally. I did video…but it’s not ready yet.  The weekend video will be up on Wednesday.  Today’s video is about motivation and keeping your fitness appointments. This morning Willie and I went to the gym.  I did a…

Celebrating my 34th birthday

Celebrating my 34th birthday

It’s my 34th birthday! How did I start off my birthday?  By teaching my cycle class, of course.  It’s the best way to start off the day. I’m still debating if I will partake in some birthday cake.  I know it’s a special day, but I’m still not sure. This was my birthday cake from a few years back and it was so yummy.  I’m easily tempted but I don’t always give in. Anywho, today is my birthday!Wow the years are rolling by and so many things have changed.  I was never one of those people who made a list…

Five most important exercises for strength

Five most important exercises for strength

I missed my five things Friday yesterday because I was busy but that doesn’t mean you’re going to miss out on this great part of the blog.  This week I’ve been teaching out of the wah-zoo and I’ve been trying to keep up with my own running workouts.  I missed a strength training workout that I’ll hopefully be able to do today. Last night I did my long run.  It was pretty, hot and windy all at the same time. I’ve been working out a lot this week and I’ve been working on some projects which really got me thinking…

Circuit training: 30 minute total body workout

Circuit training: 30 minute total body workout

You may have noticed lately that I’ve been doing a lot of circuit training lately. Circuit training has become new favorite thing because this type of workout allows me to get a great workout in within a small amount of time. Circuit training combines strength/resistance training and cardio to build your strength and muscular endurance. The best thing about these workouts is they can be done at home too. Each circuit is to be completed with minimal rest between each exercise and circuit. It’s a fast moving workout that will get your heart rate going. Be ready to sweat with…

Five things: Weight Loss Edition

Five things: Weight Loss Edition

Happy Friday everyone!  It’s been a long week but I’m glad I made it to Friday.  The bad news is our air conditioning is on the fritz so it’s hotter than biscuits in our house. I had to get some AC is out provisions.  Hopefully, the unit will be fixed today but I’m skeptical. Anyway, I wanted to start doing the Friday Five thing but with a twist…with some helpful information for people so this week’s topic will be weight loss. 1. Weight loss is a process.  It’s not going to happen overnight so be patient.  It always helps if…

Summer hydration safety

Summer hydration safety

I have some lofty goals for this summer that I know I won’t be able to accomplish unless I focus on hydration. Hydration is an important part of daily life AND to those who are on a weight loss journey. Drinking water helps your metabolism which is something we are all trying to achieve, right? *Yes, I know I spent a lot of time talking about Nuun in this post. There is no compensation happening here. It’s just a product I love and use on a regular basis. It’s definitely apart of my daily routine. I can tell you all…

The case of food poisoning

The case of food poisoning

I was fine.  I was ready to roll.  I was feeling fine Monday when I returned home.  I was just really hungry and that’s what did me in.  I had some Indian food and I got sick.  It’s just a classic case of food poisoning.  I teach 5AM on Tuesday and 30 minutes before that it wasn’t going to well but I had to teach my class. It was really sad that I couldn’t give it my all in class because Willie actually came to my class.  I was too afraid I was going to upchuck on everyone so I…

The weight loss numbers pressure

The weight loss numbers pressure

Every day we’re bombarded with numbers: times, dates, addresses, appointments, etc. But there are other numbers in our lives that consume us too like workout minutes, miles to run, pounds to lose, pounds gained, etc. Sometimes those numbers can put pressure on us. Last week my friend blogged about a mile being a mile. It’s a great read and I think everyone should read it. Basically, her post pointed out that we should do what works for us and not try to be like everyone else. It really got me thinking about how little things do influence us and push…

Fitbit Flex (and Just Dance) has me getting active again

I have a love/hate relationship with my Fitbit Flex. After Fitbloggin’ last year, I decided to get a Fitbit to help me monitor my steps and sleep patterns. Little did I know, I was going to go through three Fitbits in less than a year and these things aren’t cheap. In April, my Fitbit Flex died again on the charger and I missed it but I wasn’t going to go through the hassle of getting a replacement. FYI: Fitbit support has been very helpful in providing me replacements. It is still frustrating having this thing go out on me all of…
