Race Recap: Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon

I was provided with a free bib to this race by the festival but all opinions are my own.

Spoiler alert: This race was AWESOME!

This race was one I put on my radar last year. I found out about it too late and I couldn’t participate but I made sure it made the list for this year. AND it was great because it was a race Willie and I could do together. I’m all about couple activities, especially when it gives us extra time together.

Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon

We picked up our packets at Central Market in Plano. It was booming in there. They had a “band” playing and singing current hits. They sounded great but it was super loud!

We picked up our packets which was quick and easy. We both go two tickets to the balloon festival and a TANK top! I was excited for the tank top, Willie not so much. This pretty much solidifies that I’ll be keeping this shirt. We should have gone to the festival right after that so I could get my hot air balloon ride. I thought we could do it after the race, but I was wrong. I missed a big opportunity there.

Excited to run with @williebeatfat this morning. The Plano Balloon Festival Half marathon is probably going to be hot! #fitfam #fitfluential #runchat
I was so excited to be running with Willie in our new GTS visors. They look so spiffy. Before the race was really hectic. The traffic was horrible to park. This probably took a little too long. But we survived and walked to the festival which was really pretty. It didn’t seem too organized though because people were just standing around. They were making announcements but it was hard to hear. And then suddenly the race started. It was kind of abrupt.

Balloons at the #planoballoon festival! Sadly, these were the only hot air balloons I got to see. But it was something nice to see while running! @planoballoon

I was a little worried about it getting hot at the race because it didn’t start until 7:30am. I was really skeptical but the race was shaded throughout a big portion of the race. The last 3 miles were not shaded which kind of sucked. Direct sunlight + me = nightmare. I can run in the heat all day as long as the sun isn’t beating down on me. It was nice running and seeing the balloons. It made me happy.

Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon

The course was hilly but nothing major. Everything was runable if you wanted it to be that way. I like to walk up the hills because I’m from the world of flatness but I ran a couple of those hills. Like I said before, the last 3 miles were direct sunlight and it sucked. It was hot, but I finished in 2:28:16. I was trying to keep my marathon pace and I was pretty consistent until the sun came out and got me. I was about 15-20 seconds off my pace each mile which added up in the end. I’m working on pushing myself harder during my longer runs and races just help me do that better. I was supposed to run a total of 16 on Sunday but I ran 3 at 9pm the night before (on the worst treadmill ever).

Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon

Willie had no interest in running with me, or me running with him so I really only saw him at the beginning and when he crossed the finish line. He likes it better that way. Apparently he saw me on the switch back on the course, but I didn’t see him. I was rolling. Willie came in just over 3 hours which was to be expected. He hadn’t run that far in a long time and it was hot! I was so proud of him though because he came in looking strong despite saying he was having a foot problem. It didn’t hold him down too much though.

So proud of @williebeatfat. These are great moments to remember. #runchat #planoballoonfest #balloongedtival #fitfluential
I had the best time and Willie did too. These are moments that we’re going to remember forever and I am just so blessed to be able to do this kind of stuff with him. We had a really great time.

The race perks were great but the medal was amazing. It’s definitely going to go down as one of my favorites EVER! There was breakfast provided by Central Market when we were done but I only opted for eggs; no hasbrowns or bacon for me. Everyone was having a great time. It was truly a family event and it was great.

Final verdict: We will gladly run this race again.

The only bummer was we had to drive 5 hours back home and that’s why we had to skip our hot air balloon ride.

Blah week but the workouts are in review.

Blah week but the workouts are in review.

I must be honest.  I haven’t been very motivated to workout this week.  It’s kind of like I’ve been going through the motions.  There have been some serious highlights but for the most part I’ve been stuck in the funk.  On Monday, I returned to my workout roots and had a great time.  It was nice to sit in a cycle class and not be teaching it.  I miss that so I think I need to make more time for that. Now more than ever, I think I need a change up.  Just like I do the Sunday meal prep,…

Week in review: best friends, grapes and the half ironman

Happy Friday y’all.  I don’t know about you but I’m glad it’s Friday.  I’ve been really busy at work so life has been a bit hectic this week.  It hasn’t been a bad week at all, but it hasn’t been the best week of my life either…it’s just a week! Yesterday I did have a chance to catch up with one of my best friends.  It’s been a while since I’ve seen her so it was nice just to talk.  I guess we’ll just call September best friend reunion month because I haven’t seen any of them in awhile but…

Race recap: Frozen Hot Chocolate 10K – Austin

Race recap: Frozen Hot Chocolate 10K – Austin

My best friend Melissa is a sucker for chocolate.  I told her about these races and I was pleased to see one coming to Austin so I asked her if she wanted to do a race.  Of course, she was happy to do it.  She will run for chocolate. I like running 10K because it’s short of “longish” for a run!  I woke up Saturday to run 6.5 miles before the race so I could get my miles in.  This wasn’t anything serious for me.  I was really doing this race for fun and to hang out with my friend.…

A week in review: washing machines and workouts

Happy Friday everyone!  This has been the LONGEST short week of my life.  I’ve been finding it hard to push through this week so I’m definitely glad to have made it to Friday.  I wanted to share some of my highlights from the week.  Sadly, I don’t have many HIGHlights but there are a few. First off, last Friday I went to wash clothes and something bad happened. This is totally not health and fitness related. This happened. The timer dial wasn’t engaging. I must tell you this is a hand me down washer but FREE is always the best…

My week of recovery has been hard

My week of recovery has been hard

I’m excited for a couple of things coming up, but for me to really enjoy those things I have to be healthy and strong.  I’ve got Marine Corps Marathon in October and I never thought I would have the chance to run that race so I want to make sure I make it through all 26.2 miles of that race with a smile on my face. Plus, I running the St. Jude Marathon in December with Willie.  These are some big moments for me. This week I’ve been pretty beat up.  My knee was really stiff due to a tight…

Race Recap: Revel Rockies Marathon

Race Recap: Revel Rockies Marathon

On Sunday, I ran the Revel Rockies Marathon that ended in Morrison, CO.  I can’t tell you where it started because we had to take a bus to the top and there was no cell signal. This was the very first Revel ROCKIES race, so it was cool to be apart of the event. The race started at 6:00 am but we had to catch a shuttle to the top between 3:30 am – 4:15am. When I was leaving my hotel, there were people still partying. It was kind of funny! They dropped us off at the top but we…

Back from Colorado

Back from Colorado

It’s been a long weekend but one that I definitely needed.  I’ve been really stressed and a little unhappy with things in my life so I needed some time to just loosen up and have a good time.  The only thing that really sucked about this trip was Willie couldn’t go with me.  I really enjoy having adventures with my husband but this one we couldn’t make work. I had a great time.  I have lots to blog about so I’ll be loading up the blog to get things out of the way.  I really planned on doing more blogging…

Things I’m looking forward to doing in Denver

Note: This post was written on the plane this morning but I couldn’t get a wifi connection to post it earlier. I’m still posting it though because I took the time to write it. I had a super early flight this morning. I had to leave the house at 2:30am to make it to the airport. Obviously, that was too early for breakfast so I had to wait until after I made it through security. I packed some traditional oats in my backpack. When I found a coffee shop I got a cup of hot water and made my oats.…

What’s in my race pack?

What’s in my race pack?

I’m leaving for Denver soon for the Revel Rockies Inaugural Marathon and I’m so excited.  The only thing about traveling is you have to pack.  I really dislike packing because I’m an over packer.  I don’t want to forget anything! Plus when I’m going away for a race, I never know what I’m going to want to wear.  I have to bring options!  It’s always hard! But first, did you see my ice bucket challenge from yesterday? Now back to my trip! As far as the food goes, I’m limited until I can get there.  I measured out my oatmeal…

The runner’s version of “Would You Rather”

The runner’s version of “Would You Rather”

I saw this game of would your rather on my friend Lauren’s site and I thought it would be fun. Everyone is always saying they want to know a little bit more about me so I thought this would be a perfect chance to shed some light on me! 1. Would you rather run a 5k or a marathon? This one is easy. I would rather run a marathon. 5ks are great but I can run those in my neighborhood. I love the challenges of a marathon and feeling like I’ve worked really hard for something. There’s nothing wrong with…
