Race Recap: Garmin in the Land of Oz Marathon

Happy Marathon Monday!  Today is the Boston Marathon and every runner is glued to the television.

Watching the Boston Marathon on my iPad this morning! #cheerboston

I had to watch it on my iPad at work. One day I hope to run Boston but qualifying is not in my sights or anywhere attainable right now.  I’ll get there one day though.  Since it’s Marathon Monday, I thought it was only fitting that I share my race recap of the Garmin in The Land of Oz recap with you today!

I traveled to Olathe, KS to run this marathon. The weather wasn’t forecasted to be the best and I was a little concerned the race would be canceled. There was a 90% chance of thunderstorms forecasted and anywhere else, this race would have been killed. In Kansas, it’s a daily occurrence this time of year.

I stepped off the plane to sunny and warm weather. It was supposed to be raining. My rental car was upgraded. Looks like everything was going my way. I wanted to go out and explore but I was tired. I didn’t get much sleep the night before and I had to wake up early to catch my flight. I decided it would be best to pick up my race packet and hopefully check-in to my hotel mega early.

I arrived to pick up my packet at start time so there were a lot of people BUT I didn’t mind. I enjoyed all the Wizard of Oz things. I’m completely obsessed with the Wizard of Oz, if you didn’t know. This was the race for me.

I carbloaded at this all-you-can eat Italian buffet which was really good.

The race started at 6:45am so I called it an early night. The next morning, it wasn’t raining like it should have been, but it was coming. I took advantage of the rain free weather. The race started and ended at Garmin International. Yep, that’s the place responsible for the running watches and so much more.

I lined up with the 5 hour pacer knowing I wasn’t going to keep up. The goal was to beat the 5:30 pacer. I knew the weather was going to kick in and me being the clumsy person I am, I knew I was going to have to slow down, eventually. I was armed with a pancho for this race. I wish I would have used my rain jacket.

The sky opened up around mile 8 and it was a light show in the sky. That made me nervous because I didn’t want to get pulled from course or delayed. Nothing like that ever happened. We just kept running. The course went through a suburban park trail but with the rain large puddles were forming which meant wet feet. And then the dirt from the trail sides turned to mud and caked the trail. I started sliding and almost fell at some points. I decided it was best to be safe and not push the time.

There is nothing flat about this course. It’s advertised as flat but it was rolling hills for 85% of the race. It was nice though. I was running the hills. My pacing was great and I felt strong until it wasn’t.

My stomach starting hurting again in this race, really bad. That slowed me down for about a mile at 19. I had to make a stop at mile 21, but after that I was fine. I reached the Emerald City in 5:28:22. I finished the race really strong and would have pulled closer to a 5:15 if things would have worked in my favor.

I really enjoyed the race though. Plus, it’s my favorite race shirt and definitely good bling too. This medal will go down as one of my favorites.

After the race, I rested and then I enjoyed a baseball game.  There was going to be a major fight on the field.  It was exciting. Unfortunately, the Royals didn’t win that night but the atmosphere was great!

Garmin in the Land of Oz Marathon

I’m so glad I went to the game because it really made the trip for me.  The quest is all about seeing new places and experiencing new things.  It’s mostly about pushing myself out of my comfort zone and doing a lot of these things by myself is a big part of that.  It’s more than running.  It’s a true growing experience for me.

It was a great weekend. I checked another state off my list, met some new people, had some great food and had some fun. There’s nothing better than that.

Race recap: Davy Crockett Bear Chase Marathon

Hello marathon #20.  Yes folks, yesterday I ran my 20th marathon.  That’s kind of crazy, right?  The marathon wasn’t easy for me.  I struggled but I kept fighting.  It was just something I needed to do. Willie was nice enough to play chauffeur for me on Saturday morning to drive to Groveton,TX.  It was a very early morning because he had to wake up at 3 am for a 4 am leave time to make it to the race at 6 am for packet pickup.  We got there a quarter to 6 and I have to thank my husband for…

Five things on this Friday

Five things on this Friday

Happy Friday everyone!  I’ve been waiting for this day all week because I knew it would be a rest day for me.  I told myself that if I put in the work during the week, I could take today off from working out.  I was looking forward to sleeping in, but I still managed to wake up at 5:20am.  I got an extra hour of sleep so I’ll take that as a win. 1. I took it to the couch this morning to watch some Real Housewives of New York City and Married at First Sight.  I do love my…

Race Recap: Austin Rattler 25K

Race Recap: Austin Rattler 25K

I did it!  I did a trail run and I enjoyed.  I made myself do this race because I’m afraid of the trails.  It’s very different than road racing and I need to get a little bit more comfortable in this type of environment. I’ve come a long way since my first trail race and I’ve noticed an improvement each time I get out there. The Austin Rattler 25K was about pushing past my “boundaries” and forgetting the fear.  The Austin Rattler is apart of the Leadville race series and I signed up on a whim.  Headsweats made this day…

Race Recap: Zooma Women’s Series Texas Half Marathon

On Saturday I ran the Zooma Women’s half marathon at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop, TX! I ran this race last year and did it again this year for the experience. I had a great time hanging out with my friends before so why not do it again? This race is all about hanging out with your friends! I wasn’t really running this for time because it was all about hanging out with my friends and having a good time. Kind of odd though cause none of them ran the half marathon so that meant they were waiting…

Race Recap: RnR Dallas 5K and Half Marathon 2015

There are a couple of a races I do every year and this is one of them. I had big expectations for this race because it’s always the race I PR. That didn’t happen this year, but at least I had a great time. Willie and I ran the 5K on Saturday morning which was part of the Rock n Roll Series Remix challenge. Run a race each day and earn the extra bling. This was the first year for the remix challenge in Dallas. It wasn’t the prettiest 5K because we ran through a parking lot and around the…

Race Recap: The Gusher Marathon

Race Recap: The Gusher Marathon

The Gusher Marathon, Half marathon and 5k is the big race in my hometown and it’s a great race. I take the race for granted because it’s local and it’s not the big travel tada. But that doesn’t take away from the greatness of this race. I was very excited because my mom came out to do the 5k. Plus Missy, Tyson and Emmy came out to run too. I hate I didn’t get to see them start or finish though. The Gusher is a double loop course.  It killed me mentally last year but it didn’t this year.  The double…

Race Recap: The Little Rock Marathon

Race Recap: The Little Rock Marathon

I running behind on my race recaps.  I thought I better get this Little Rock recap up before it’s too late.  Once again it was pretty cold in Little Rock!  I did the 5K on Saturday and it was 20 degrees outside.  All the fountains were frozen over and there were some slick spots on the street.  I didn’t get any pictures because it was too cold for that.  I’m a wimp. I ran the 5K in 28:41 and got 3rd in my age group.  Too bad they didn’t give out age group awards because I definitely would have had…

Race Recap: The Mercedes-Benz Marathon

Race Recap: The Mercedes-Benz Marathon

I never do race recaps on the same day that I run.  Lucky for you I’m sitting in a hotel room by myself watching television. This weekend was Mercedes-Benz Marathon weekend in Birmingham, AL.  Yes that’s right, the quest continues and I get to check another state off my list. Yesterday I ran the Superhero 5K which was really fun. The energy was great and fun.  It was really windy and a little cold but nothing too major.  It was just a fun 5K to do and I got a cape to wear, but I didn’t because it was windy.…

Last year at the Little Rock Marathon, I met Danielle from runningluv.com.  We went gaga over this product last year. Now I basically just follow her around from expo to expo. Anyone who sweats doing a good workout, NEEDS this product. The Runningluv comes in numerous colors and several different designs. There are several ways to wrap it so it can be used over and over…

Race Recap: The Austin Half Marathon

Race Recap: The Austin Half Marathon

I signed up for this race fully intending on running the full marathon. This is a race on my list that I MUST do. Last year I said I was going to do the race this year and I had high hopes of running it. I picked up my packet, enjoyed the expo for the amount of time I was there… Running a marathon takes focus and control because it really is a mental battle. My head wasn’t in the game. We had to wake up pretty early to make it the race start. They recommended being parked by 5:30…
