Race Recap: Run Houston! Minute Maid Park

Yesterday I ran the Run Houston Minute Maid Park 10K in Houston. This was a race I was planning to do but didn’t sign up for until this week.  I’m being cautious about all of this stuff, but these races are a good excuse to throw myself into mileage.  I will use time as an excuse not to run longer so the races for me to make it until the end.  This race was the second in the race series.  I’ve never run any of these races but I’ll get to that later.

I woke up early to squeeze into my GTS shirt. It doesn’t fit the way it did, but at least I can put it on now. I’ll take it! A couple of other people from the running group ran the race too.  It’s always nice to see familiar faces and have people to support you.  I was happy to see these ladies waiting for me at the end.  It was nice.

The race was a 5K and a 10K. The 5K started at 7:00 am and the 10K started at 7:45 am. There was a modest amount of people running the 10K race. I really did expect more people, but there was a good number of people out there to enjoy the day. The 10K was two loops of the course.

The race went well. It was warm and I didn’t run with a water bottle. That was a big mistake because I needed water long before I got to a water station. This kind of caught up with me on the second loop. I’m still doing my run walk thing and I’m getting much better…when I’m hydrated properly. I had a goal of trying to finish in 1:15 but I didn’t meet that goal.

I finished the 10K in 1:19:27 which when I got my final results, I was thrilled with the time because it was rough on the second loop. I did get lazy on the second loop and I was forced to stop for traffic on both loops. (That didn’t make me happy.) The weather warmed up pretty quickly and there wasn’t shade on part of the route. The sun is my running kryptonite when combined with warm weather. I finished my 10K in February in 1:26:32 so I’m making progress. That’s the only thing I can ask for.

What did I like about the race:

  • The medals were super great.
  • I signed up late for the race, but the price wasn’t that bad.
  • If I were a pizza eating person, the post race party would have been great.
  • It was the Minute Maid Park. I’m a huge baseball fan.

What I didn’t like about the race:

  • The packet pickup line was super long. I waited in line for 40 minutes getting my stuff. They ended up having to delay the 5K because people couldn’t pick up their stuff.
  • I wish the races started at the same time. Starting at 7am would have made the weather for suitable for running. I’m convinced I could have done better.
  • I think they ran out of food at the end. The only thing there for me was pizza and I didn’t want to eat that.
  • There was a bit of construction on the roads and clumsy people like me may have taken that to heart a bit more than others.

What I learned:
I am making progress. I need to force myself to run a little bit longer so I can get use to it. Time on my feet will make a big difference. Running with these new hips is a little different. I didn’t hate the race but I wasn’t overjoyed with it either. I’ll decide if I’m going to run the next race in the series in a few weeks.

Progress will come

Progress will come

Progress is moving forward, moving toward achieving a goal.  Progress is always welcome but doesn’t always come easy. There are a few things I am currently working on: Trying to lose my pregnancy weight. Find the balance and time to get my workouts in on a consistent basis. Getting back into running…at the pace I’m more familiar running. There have been times when I’ve felt completely helpless during this time and there have been the moments when I thought I was taking steps backward.  When progress doesn’t show its face, its hard to find the motivation to keep moving forward.…

Rock n Roll Dallas Weekend Recap

Rock n Roll Dallas Weekend Recap

This past weekend I ran some races, faced some fears and regained a few parts of myself in the process. This weekend was my first big challenge since having Baby G three months ago. It was a good weekend for me and I’m nothing but positive with moving forward. A few weeks back, I found out I was accepted as a Rock n Roll race series ambassador through the Rock n Blog program.  This is something I have been chasing for awhile (3 years) and it finally arrived on my doorstep when I had really given up hope.  I just…

Do what you can

Do what you can

Happy Monday! Now is the time to do what you can no matter the level or the time behind it. I’m going through a humbling experience right now because my fitness level obviously isn’t the same as what it was 10 months ago. It’s not like I’m starting all over, but I have taken a few steps backward. Before y’all start hitting the comments about how I just had a baby or I should be blessed, I want to shut it down. I know I just had a baby and I am beyond blessed for my baby. That is not…

Setting my goals for 2017

Setting my goals for 2017

I’ve always said the best way to achieve your goals is to write those goals down and revisit them from time to time.  This will be my place to share my goals with you and you will hopefully keep me accountable to some point.  Things in my life are different now and it’s weird how quickly things can change.  In the past, I would have been talking about collecting states on my marathon quest or that new distance I was hoping to tackle. I feel like I’m in a place of starting over and I don’t mind it at all.…

New year and new goals

New year and new goals

Happy New Year! I usually don’t make it midnight but I had to wake up to feed Baby G and I really wanted to bring in the New Year with her. My new year situation never included a big party, but this is probably the biggest party I’ve ever had. It’s that time of year when people embrace the new year, new goals thing. It’s great that people can see a new year as a new beginning. I encourage you to think of it the same way from week to week. There are people who are anti-new year resolutions and…

Motivation Monday: Patience is key

Motivation Monday: Patience is key

The year is winding down and it’s the time to reflect on all the great things you did this year.  I truly hope it’s been a great year for you and you have made the progress you desired at the start of the year.  Even if you didn’t reach all of your goals doesn’t mean it’s still not going to happen.  Patience is key and things take time, a person just needs to stay the course. I know what you’re thinking, “it’s easier said than done.” That’s the absolute truth, it’s easy to think those things but putting it into…

Friday Five: Turkey burgers, headbands, working out & more

Happy Friday!  I hope all is well in the world with you.  I felt like I had a really productive morning but then the afternoon seems a little less eventful.  I guess you could say I spent it on the couch sleeping. I thought I should sit down and blog since I’m feeling up to it and I’m well rested. So there’s a blog and some hot chocolate…and here I am. I think it’s a good way to spend a Friday. 1. Today I’m officially 38 weeks which means our baby girl should be making her grand debut soon.  FYI:…

Motivation to get back on track

Motivation to get back on track

It’s the holidays and people seem to get off track during this time.  For me, I’m dealing with a big event coming my way.  My focus has just been getting something in my tummy and I’ve been GREAT for the most part.  But with our little girl on the way, I’m trying to get back on track so I can stay healthy and get lose this baby weight. I’ve learned that in the past making a plan is the most effective way to accomplish a goal. It’s easier to stay focused and on track that way. I know it worked…

Do I still meal prep?

Do I still meal prep?

I’ve read the e-mails and I know people want more food stuff on the blog because it’s seriously lacking.  I have to be real, we do a modified food prep thing in our house right now.  Eating in our house has been a little lackluster and some weeks I just noticed I was wasting money on food.  The short answer to the questions is: yes.  Now he’s the long explanation: We still make our weekly trips to grocery store and I do start out with good intentions. It’s day to day with me so there are just some days I…

Transform your thinking to be grateful

Transform your thinking to be grateful

My blogging schedule has been interuptted by the Olympics. I love the Olympics so hard that I spend all my free time watching it.  Diving, archery, rowing, fencing, volleyball (surprisingly), gymnastics and weightlifting have been occupying my time.  I’m sorry for all the delays.  This post should have been up yesterday.  Now back to blogging. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes spend so much dwelling on the things I haven’t done or don’t have.  It can really set your mind back and it lessens the accomplishments that I have achieved.  I blogged about how pregnancy messed with weight…
