How To Enjoy A More Active Lifestyle As A Parent

A  lack of time is the top excuse people give for not exercising enough. If you work long hours, raising kids or juggling both, you may feel there aren’t enough hours in the day. When you become a parent, finding the time to exercise can be more difficult, but there are solutions. In this handy guide, we’ll outline some simple steps to enjoy a more active lifestyle when you have children.

Active hobbies

Encourage active hobbies

One of the best ways to be more active as a parent is to encourage hobbies that will get your heart racing. Active pursuits and sports will help you hit exercise targets and are a great way to spend quality time together. Many options are available, from climbing, hiking, or kayaking in the great outdoors to kicking soccer balls around in the park, going to dance classes, or learning to do acrobatics. Think about your interests as a family and look for ways to spend time together doing activities that everyone will love. It’s an excellent idea to ask around, get inspiration and advice from other parents, and research local clubs and groups online.

Maximize your workout time

If you’re short on time, which many parents are, making the most of every minute you have to work out is essential. If you’re on a mission to get fit or hit activity targets, opt for activities that will help you achieve your personal goals. Short, intense bursts of exercise will help you burn calories or hit desired heart rate zones faster than longer sessions of gentle exercise, for example. HIIT sessions, boxing and spin classes, and sprint interval training are good examples of high-energy workouts that burn calories fast and get your heart pumping.

Incorporate daily exercise

Adjusting your routine can help you increase your activity levels. Simple steps like getting up 20 minutes earlier, walking to work instead of driving, going for a walk or run every evening, or doing a workout or exercise class after work or during your lunch break can make a big difference. Schedule breaks for physical activity and manage your diary. Looking after your health and well-being is as important as other aspects of your life, such as work and social commitments.

Use your evenings and weekends to get active

There are many ways to spend your weekends and evenings doing activities everyone can enjoy. If you have a free weekend coming up, or you usually have an hour or so between collecting the kids from school and having dinner, make use of this time. Play games in the backyard, go for a walk or a bike ride, explore natural wonders, or book family-friendly sessions. Play at the park or burn energy after a long day by dancing around the kitchen.

How To Enjoy A More Active Lifestyle As A Parent - Workout at home

Work out at home

When you have kids, particularly young children, getting to the gym or an exercise facility can be challenging. Working out at home is a brilliant way to be more active without finding childcare or worrying about spending too much time away from your children. You can use gym equipment at home, stream workouts, or follow exercise programs via apps and social media groups. Exercising at home gives you more flexibility, saves money, and frees up time as you don’t have to factor in traveling to and from a class or session.

How To Enjoy A More Active Lifestyle As A Parent - Get Kids Involved

Get your kids involved

Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week for adults and at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children aged over 5. Getting your kids involved is a fantastic way to set a good example, spend more time together, and encourage healthy habits. From jogging, playing tennis, and walking to doing dance routines, going swimming, and practicing yoga in the living room, there are many activities suitable for kids of all ages.

Lean on others

If you find it impossible to exercise regularly due to childcare or work commitments, lean on your support network. Work with your partner to create a schedule that allows both of you to work out. Ask friends and family members to babysit or team up with other moms and dads in the neighborhood to create a rota.

Look for child-friendly classes.

Going to child-friendly classes is an effective way to work out more, and it can also have amazing social benefits. Examples include mom-and-baby yoga, family-friendly dance classes, and swim sessions suitable for tots.

When you become a parent, you lose much spare time, making it hard to stick to a regular workout routine. If you’re struggling to find time to exercise, there are solutions. Encouraging active hobbies, maximizing your time, scheduling sessions, and using your evenings and weekends to play sports or enjoy active pursuits can help boost activity levels. Other ideas include looking for child-friendly classes, working out at home, getting your kids involved, and leaning on friends and family members.

Need Help Getting into Exercise?

Need Help Getting into Exercise?

If it’s been a while since you last exercised or you haven’t ever done anything stressing us before, getting into exercise can feel overwhelming. It can also feel overwhelming if you’re simply lazy enough not to bother with exercise in the first place, but it comes to a point where you feel like you need to move your body if you hope to feel anything less than back pain ever again.  If you have health issues right now, you should get medical clearance first because while you can look at websites such as http://www.muscleandmotion.com/ to get an idea of how the body works, a…

Friday File: podcasting, running, essential oils and more

Happy Friday!  I’m starting something “new” on the blog called the Friday File.  I’ll be honest, it’s just the Friday Five but without the five.  The pressure to produce a list of the five things sometimes made me not want to do a weekly roundup. I feel like I’ve been hitting my stride this week in life, which means next week everything is going to fall apart.  I’m ok with that though.  I did some great things this week. If you haven’t listened to the podcast, you definitely should.  Having this podcast will add more content to the site and…

Preparing for Christmas

Preparing for Christmas

I missed blogging yesterday because I was just too tired. From Tiny Tot’s birthday and now planning for Christmas, I kind of screwed the pooch on the blogging thing. I did have a very productive day yesterday which has eased up on my Sunday a bit. Normally I would tell you about the meal prep I would be doing this week, but that’s isn’t going to happen today. I can’t fit any more food in my fridge. My fridge is packed to the brim with things for Christmas dinner and some essentials we need to last until then. It’s been…

Monday Motivation: Take the challenge

Happy Monday everyone!  I’ve been trying to catch up on blog business so I can get back to do what I love.  It’s been a life-changing year for me and just when I thought I have my crap together, something else pops up. It’s all been a challenge but that’s what life is about, right? I encourage everyone to take on the challenge.  Don’t let the challenge knock you down.  Face it head on, tackle the challenge, and overcome the challenge. There are plenty of people out there in the world who tell say, “you shouldn’t, you can’t, you don’t have…

Group fitness etiquette

Group fitness etiquette

I don’t really talk about a bunch on the blog, but I am a group fitness instructor.  I am a HUGE advocate for group fitness for many reasons. There has been a surge in group fitness over the years with Crossfit, barre, spin, yoga and many other choices. If you’ve never been to a group fitness class, here are some tips before you go. Show up to class on time. I know it’s hard sometimes and there are times when you’re just running late.  Just because you’re running late doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to get your workout on.  Access…

Focus is real

Focus is real

To put this into words is hard because I have been extremely focused lately.  I’m the person you come to for motivation and inspiration to tackle your dreams and lately I’ve just been focused on chasing my own stuff.  It’s been hard for me to put it into words to post here on the blog. I’m still here.  If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve still been around. The goals I’ve set for myself aren’t visual goals.  That’s why I haven’t had much to post on Instagram (besides in my stories).  The goals I set are kind of…

Postpartum depression confession

Postpartum depression confession

Yesterday I was empowered by Sublimely Fit to talk about my struggle with post-partum depression on my Instagram. I met Beth last year at Fitbloggin while we were both pregnant so I feel we’ll always have a bit of a bond. I was beyond impressed that she spoke so openly about her post-partum depression because I haven’t been able to. Believe it or not, I’m a private person. I know that sounds weird because I put my “life” on social media for all of you to enjoy. I’m not good with opening up about struggles. I am the one who…

Tips for new runners

Tips for new runners

It’s about time for me to get back on my blogging game and provide some useful information. Right now I’m about to start my marathon training for Chicago so running is on my mind. Plus, I feel like I’m starting all over again so this is the time for me to share tips for new runners since I feel like a new runner…again. 1. Build your base. It’s easy to get super jazzed about running. It’s easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to others. You have to put all of those things aside and just build your base…

I never know where to start

I never know where to start

I never know where to start so I’ve been avoiding my blog altogether. I have plans for the blog but I just don’t have the time to execute them. Well, I don’t think I’ve been managing my time correctly when I do have the time. I guess I’m trying to add things back gradually. First I was trying to get back to working out, then dropping some weight and then getting back to teaching my cycle classes. Now might be time for me to get back to working on the blog. I’m really ready to get back to it and…
