Race Recap & marathon training has taken me to 18 miles

When I tell people I’m running a marathon, I get a couple of strange looks. To those who run and love to do it, it isn’t a far fetched idea, but to the people who never run can’t seem to understand. People who don’t run, don’t understand why we like to run. When I took on the marathon, I was even clueless about it. Marathon training takes up a lot of time. I run four times a week which isn’t really a big deal, but the length of the runs is what takes up the time. I wake up at weird hours to run the streets and sometimes I’m forced to run the evening. It’s not always ideal. When training for any endurance event, it’s pretty much known that training plan will run your life. Most people who aren’t in it, don’t understand.

Eighteen miles is the longest run I’ve ever done and I never thought I would get out there and run that much. I was wicked nervous about running these 18 miles. I know when I’m training, I train alone and it’s much harder for me to keep with the pace. I can’t really find anyone to run with me for various reasons which are all valid. People ask why I’m running all these races? Yes, I enjoy running the races and I would be lying if I didn’t enjoy getting the medals because that is always an upside! But I am currently running all these races to keep me focused on my training plan. It some how comforts me and makes me push a little harder. It kind of sucks when I go and I really want to PR during these races, but I have to remember it’s about getting through the run at a particular pace.

While some of my friends were running the NYC Marathon, I ran 18 miles. I ran 5 miles (which my Nike Plus app ate and it makes me sooo MAD) before the race and finished it up with a half marathon. It was freaking cold yesterday morning in the Big D(allas). So cold that the dew froze into a THICK layer of ice on the tables before the event. I was prepared for this, but I was still cold. Luckily it warmed up half through the race but when the race started I couldn’t feel my hands OR my feet. That was the first time I was not able to feel my feet. I even did what the race directors suggested and wore a different pair of shoes and socks to wear before the race because I was sitting around for about an hour and half before the race.

The five miles before the race when surprisingly well and I was feeling good. The beginning of the race went pretty well too. I really didn’t start to feel anything bad until around mile 9. My legs started to get heavy and I realized that my half marathon fueling plan wasn’t going to work for my marathon. I had also forgotten to bring my banana with me and my protein mix before the race so this could have been a problem. Also, around mile 9 my stomach started to get a little queasy. This has been happening to me a lot lately and I’m wondering if my problem with the GU gels is starting to reoccur and/or I’ve been taking gatorade at most races which is something I’m not use to. But all in all, running the 18 miles wasn’t that bad and it was a learning experience. This was definitely the first time I thought, “Why they hell am I doing this?” But then I remembered I am running the marathon for myself to prove that I can do something from start to finish and if that inspires blog readers along the way, that’s a plus!

A few things about the race:

  • This race was put on by a local running club and it was extremely well organized.  Plus, there were a lot of great sponsors for the event.
  • I got a shirt at packet pickup (cotton long sleeve) and then a nice tech shirt for finishing the race.  The medal was pretty cool too!
  • The shuttles too and from the race were phenomenal.  They worked with DISD to use the school buses from DART stations.  The buses were on time and I never had to wait and the ride was only 10 or so minutes.  It was nice not having to worry about getting too and from the race.  To me, this is the most stressful thing about races, but this experience was VERY pleasant.  I think a lot of race directors can learn from this race.
  • The course was beautiful.  This is one of the reasons why I’m choosing not to do my long runs at home.  It same ole thing on the same flat terrain.  I wanted a change of scenery and this course was GORGEOUS.  The race was held at Norbuck Park and ran around White Rock Lake.  The beautiful surroundings made the race even better.
  • Great crowd support!  There were tons of signs about people “running better than the government.” It was funny the first 3 times a saw it, but it got old really quick, especially the 15th time I saw the sign.  I think I was seeing the same people holding up the signs though and just moving to different places.  So if I would have attended this race with a support system, I thought it was really cool that it was spectator friendly and they could move from place to place very quickly.

I finished the half marathon in 2:18:50 which I was really surprised about since I had to run 5 miles before the race.  2:18:50 is on par with my RnR San Diego and Tyler Rose. I am positive I would have finished better than that if I didn’t have some serious problems with side stitch at mile 10-11.  It was a very happy moment for me because I finished my 10th half marathon of 2013 and ran 18 miles.  The only bad thing was, I went alone and had to drive home after all of that in the car.  Five hours after running 18 miles = no fun! I will probably run this race again next year because it was perfect! Great job to the organizers!

Race Recap: Rock n Roll Denver Half Marathon

Race Recap: Rock n Roll Denver Half Marathon

There are a few things you should know before you read this recap. 1. This wasn’t really supposed to be a race for me.  It was supposed to be a training run.  My training plan called for 15 miles so… 2. I got up early and ran two miles before heading to the start line. I’ve never ran 15 miles before, ever. 3. Even though it was just supposed to be a training run, I put my race face on and was ready to roll. 4. I shouldn’t have done that because ALTITUDE is a horrible thing and it will…

Race Recap: Tyler Rose Half Marathon

Race Recap: Tyler Rose Half Marathon

I finished my 8th half marathon of 2013 yesterday! It was a really great experience. I did set out with a pretty lofty goal of trying to finish in 2:15 which is more than doable for me, but I forgot one thing: this WAS THE HILLIEST RACE I’VE EVER RUN! The race was about three hours away so we loaded up the car and headed to spend some time with friends before the race. This was probably the best part of the weekend for me because we just got to hang out and have a good time. There was tons…

Rock n Roll Philadelphia and loving the city

This past weekend was HUGE for me.  I took my first trip by myself.  No friends, no mom, no husband and I had the time of my life.  When I first booked the flight and decided to go I knew this was going to be situation and I was nervous.  Every once and a while I would say I was nervous about it but when the time came to go…I wasn’t nervous.  This was a totally different experience for me and it was a journey I needed to take for myself.  I’m glad I did go because I was forced…

Sabine Causeway 5K

Last night I went running with my friends! I almost missed this race because I was scheduled to go to Gulf Shores to be with my bestie. I hate that I’m missing out on the fun, BUT something serious came up that kind of made me stay in town. Running this race was a good alternative for not sitting by the pool right now. I love running races at home because you know everyone and the environment is just fun and friendly. Everyone is so supportive and it’s just a great time! Here is my race video: Much better than…

Race Recap: Area 13.1 Half Marathon Roswell, GA

Saturday night I ran a half marathon in Roswell, GA! I wanted to do something fun because I feel like I’m always doing these super serious races and I thought I just needed to chillax. This is my 6th half marathon of the year and I think I have 4 or 5 more to go plus my marathon! This was the most miles I’ve ran since the Rock n Roll San Diego Half, but I have been running consistently. I wasn’t trying to break any records here and I really wanted to keep a nice and steady pace throughout the…

Running: Rock n Roll San Diego

We went to San Diego to run! My first Rock n Roll race was the Dallas race and I loved the experience so much I had to go again. I had no idea that San Diego would have so many people racing. There were a lot of people. Plus, Willie decided RnR San Diego was going to be his first half marathon! This made me so very happy, but I’ll talk more about that later. On Friday we went to the expo to register Willie and to pick up all of our stuff. This expo was really nice and we…

The toughest race I’ve ever ran

The toughest race I’ve ever ran

On Memorial Day, Willie and I ran the The Patriot Half Marathon (me) and 5k (him) to support Carry The Load.  We started out being very excited about this race but it kind of got over shadowed by the race we will run in San Diego on Sunday!  But this was the hardest race I’ve ever ran.  There was humidity and wind and hills. I’m just not use to the rolling hills so I had to take it slow.  Plus, I wasn’t interested in injuring myself where I couldn’t run in SAN DIEGO!  You see?  It’s become that important to…

The Catch Up Post: Goals, Races and Mother’s Day

I feel out of touch with the blog because so many things have been going on in life. As you may have read, my grandmother passed and I took it very hard. I didn’t expect to take it that hard, but I did. There were a lot of tears shed over this experience. I saw her decline every day until she passed; I basically watched her die. She’s in a better place now after living a long and amazing life. Her passing added emotional stress and sleep deprivation to my life so my overall well being kind of took a…

Willie’s first long distance race: Austin 10/20

I ran my first 10 mile race on April 14th! This was my first long distance run. Before this race I had only run 5K races with a finishing time around 36 or 37 minutes. A couple of days before the race, Angela bought me a new pair of running shoes, running socks, and calf compression sleeves. When I ran the previous 5Ks, I had been running in a pair of old Nike running shoes that really needed to be thrown in the trash. The new shoes were Brooks running shoes and when I first put them on I noticed…

2:13:50 – My first Rock N Roll race

2:13:50 – My first Rock N Roll race

My Rock n Roll Dallas experience was amazing.  I was really hesitant about running this race because the Gusher was just two weeks before.  I had never run two half marathons that close to each other and I was just afraid to commit, but I’m glad that I did. After the Gusher, my knee was bothering me and I got worried about not being able to run in Dallas.  I did small short runs, became really great friends with my foam roller and did lots and lots of stretching.  I even cut back on teaching my spin classes (I like…
