Race Recap: RnR Dallas 5K and Half Marathon 2015

There are a couple of a races I do every year and this is one of them. I had big expectations for this race because it’s always the race I PR. That didn’t happen this year, but at least I had a great time.

Willie and I ran the 5K on Saturday morning which was part of the Rock n Roll Series Remix challenge. Run a race each day and earn the extra bling. This was the first year for the remix challenge in Dallas. It wasn’t the prettiest 5K because we ran through a parking lot and around the fair grounds, but I had a great time. I finished in 30:59! I started off running with Willie but he was going to take some walk breaks so I decided to run on.

I got to meet Deena Kaster. How freaking cool is that?

After that we headed to the expo to work the Louisiana Marathon booth! You all know that we love this race and 2016 is the 5th year for the race. I encourage everyone to come run this epic race and have a great time. Sign up and use the code IKNOWGILLIS to get 10% off your registration.
Missy and Tyson were there to run the relay together so it was a bestie party up in Dallas last weekend.

RnR Dallas 2015

Sunday morning I got to meet some Team Chocolate Milk mates in the VIP section which was very swanky! It was the nicest VIP I’d ever been to. Tons of pre-race food…and post-race stuff. I wasn’t feeling all jazzed about the run like I normally am.  I was definitely looking forward to the chocolate milk at the end of the race.  In the back of my head I kind of knew this was going to be a rough one for me.  My foot was still bothering a little bit and I wasn’t 100%.  The most important thing was recovery for me.  I already had my plan mapped out to get me rolling on to the next race and definitely included chocolate milk.

I started off the race cautiously but then I realized I was going too fast. I really hadn’t ran in a week and some change so I needed to take it easy. Running 8:45 – 9:00 min miles isn’t taking it easy for me. I slowed down and I took walk breaks just to keep it conservative. I was having a hard time catching my breathe later on in the race. Every time I started running something would pull me back. I just did what I could. It was frustrated because this is MY RACE every year. Except there was a course change and it was significantly warmer this year.

Best race pic ever! #rnrdal #teamchocolatemilk #rnrdal @runrocknroll

I wasn’t a fan of the course change. I thought the hills were steeper which isn’t really a big deal to me because I’m use to it now. I didn’t like how the route wasn’t as scenic as years past. I know they wanted to cut back on the need to move people from Fair Park to the start line since it was a point to point course in the past but not this year. I did like that part. Don’t get me wrong, the course had some very good moments and it was probably better than what I think now but I just wasn’t in the right mindset. There was something wrong with me that I just couldn’t pin point. But I did get the best race picture ever.

In the end, I finished the half marathon in 2:19:51. Not so bad just not what I wanted. I won’t complain because two weeks ago I didn’t think I was going to be able to make this run. Willie ended up finishing 11 minutes FASTER than what he hoped which was great. Missy and Tyson ran the relay which was really cool. Missy is training for RnR San Diego and this is her first step on her journey! She did great!

Pros:
VIP (restrooms, food and private gear check)
RnR race atmosphere is pretty awesome.
Selfie spots along the course.
Cute finishers medal and great t-shirts this year.
Chocolate milk at the end. I never know how much I miss this until it’s not there at the end of the race and that’s happened a lot lately.

Cons:
The race took us through a lot of construction zones and the roads were pretty bad at points.
The expo wasn’t as big or nice as years past.
Lack of port-o-lets at the start.

Final verdict: I’ll do it again because I always do.

Race Recap: The Gusher Marathon

Race Recap: The Gusher Marathon

The Gusher Marathon, Half marathon and 5k is the big race in my hometown and it’s a great race. I take the race for granted because it’s local and it’s not the big travel tada. But that doesn’t take away from the greatness of this race. I was very excited because my mom came out to do the 5k. Plus Missy, Tyson and Emmy came out to run too. I hate I didn’t get to see them start or finish though. The Gusher is a double loop course.  It killed me mentally last year but it didn’t this year.  The double…

Race Recap: The Little Rock Marathon

Race Recap: The Little Rock Marathon

I running behind on my race recaps.  I thought I better get this Little Rock recap up before it’s too late.  Once again it was pretty cold in Little Rock!  I did the 5K on Saturday and it was 20 degrees outside.  All the fountains were frozen over and there were some slick spots on the street.  I didn’t get any pictures because it was too cold for that.  I’m a wimp. I ran the 5K in 28:41 and got 3rd in my age group.  Too bad they didn’t give out age group awards because I definitely would have had…

Race Recap: The Mercedes-Benz Marathon

Race Recap: The Mercedes-Benz Marathon

I never do race recaps on the same day that I run.  Lucky for you I’m sitting in a hotel room by myself watching television. This weekend was Mercedes-Benz Marathon weekend in Birmingham, AL.  Yes that’s right, the quest continues and I get to check another state off my list. Yesterday I ran the Superhero 5K which was really fun. The energy was great and fun.  It was really windy and a little cold but nothing too major.  It was just a fun 5K to do and I got a cape to wear, but I didn’t because it was windy.…

Race Recap: The Austin Half Marathon

Race Recap: The Austin Half Marathon

I signed up for this race fully intending on running the full marathon. This is a race on my list that I MUST do. Last year I said I was going to do the race this year and I had high hopes of running it. I picked up my packet, enjoyed the expo for the amount of time I was there… Running a marathon takes focus and control because it really is a mental battle. My head wasn’t in the game. We had to wake up pretty early to make it the race start. They recommended being parked by 5:30…

Race Recap: Katy Half Marathon

Race Recap: Katy Half Marathon

I’ve realized that I’m not super into remembering what happened during a race and honestly, that’s not the most important part of a race for me.  The actual running part is my own thing and some days I’m feeling it and other days I’m not.  That doesn’t make or break a race situation for me. This past weekend I decided to run the Katy Half Marathon because I wasn’t feeling motivated to run.  I really couldn’t trust that I would get out of bed to run and I knew I needed a little extra motivation.  I was skeptical of doing…

Race Recap: The Louisiana Marathon

Race Recap: The Louisiana Marathon

I had no skin in the game here.  I just ran the Mississippi Blues Marathon the week before and I just wanted to finish.  I won’t lie when I tell you, I chose to run the marathon so I could eat some of the delicious food at the finisher festival.  Spoiler alert:  I was too tired and worn out when I finished to enjoy any of the food. As the week went on, I just wanted to do better than I did last year.  I finished last year in 4:57:53 so coming in at 4:56:59 would have been plenty for…

Race Recap: The Advocate 5K at The Louisiana Marathon

The Louisiana Marathon race weekend is one of my favorites of the year. I can’t explain why but it just is. Maybe it’s the energy, the friendly people, the beautiful course and even the great finisher festival. It’s a race I don’t think I’ll be missing. Willie and I usually run the 5K the day before our big races. This year I was running the 5K and the full. Willie was running the 5K and the half. This year the race included the quarter marathon (6.55 miles) and I wish I would have signed up for that instead of the…

Race Recap: Mississippi Blues Marathon

This past weekend, I ran the Mississippi Blues Marathon in Jackson, MS.  This race made Runner’s World Best Marathons to run this year.  I was highly intrigued about this race making the list.  Jackson isn’t exactly the travel hot spot so I really wondered what the fuss was about.  I quickly learned but I’ll get to that later. This race was also the marathon maniac reunion race of 2015!  Last year the reunion race was The Louisiana Marathon, but I was just running my first marathon at that race.  It was exciting to be a Marathon Maniac this year and…

Race Recap: Texas Marathon

Race Recap: Texas Marathon

I wanted to get the new year started off the right way by doing something healthy.  New Year’s Day started with a 90 minute drive to run a marathon.  The forecast for this race was not ideal but it got better as the day approached. When we arrived, we went to pick up our stuff.  We got a huge bag, hat and t-shirt!  This bag is seriously huge.  I have no idea what I’m going to put in it.  Maybe I’ll just use it as my race day bag because I always have so much stuff. I didn’t take any…

Race Recap: BCS Marathon

Race Recap: BCS Marathon

My double header weekend ended with the BCS Marathon in College Station, TX!  We literally finished Brazos Bend and jumped in the car to get to College Station for packet pick-up!  I hate that we didn’t make in time for the expo, but we did make it there in time for the start of late pick up. Everyone was eyeing us because we already had medals on.  It was kind of awkward but funny.  We decided to take a picture by the tree.  At this point we had been in the car for almost two hours and we were starting…
