Race Recap: Texas 10 Huntsville

Sunday I ran the Texas 10 Series race in Huntsville, TX. This was the first time I’ve ever run one of these events. Huntsville isn’t too far from our house so we were able to drive there early in the morning and make it back for the other things that needed to get done that day. It was an early morning because he had to wake up at 3am to make sure we left the house by 4am and arrived by 6am.

I picked up my packet race morning. It is really nice to be able to do so. There was the normal stuff but I also got a hat because I registered for it so early. I registered for this back in April when they had bonanza pricing and I got it for $20. The shirt was really nice and the hat was pretty cool too.

Race start was 7:30 am. The race was either one loop of 5 miles or two loops of 10. I was running the 10 mile because I was using it as a Chicago Marathon training run. The weather was really nice with a breeze in the air which is totally welcome with all the heat we’re having. This was probably as close to fall as we get in these parts. I think there were about 700 runners in the race.

I was warned by many people at the start this was going to be a hilly race. I never really thought about it being hilly. I’ve NEVER run a road race in Huntsville, but I’ve done plenty of trail races. And yes, it was hilly. In fact, is started off on a hill but it was manageable. I can handle the steady shallow hill climb but an abrupt change in elevation is something I’m not use to and not trained for.

There were some tougher parts of the race due to hills but when I needed to walk up a hill I did it. I didn’t want to shoot my heart rate up where it would exhaust me to the point I couldn’t run when I could.

I’ve been suffering a bit more this year with the humidity. It’s just been harder for me to breathe and it has slowed me down a bit. I had to be mindful of this on the second loop when the sun was starting to come up and the air got a little thicker. This was in no way horrible humidity but it was present.

I noticed on the first loop that my watch wasn’t hitting the mile markers toward the end. It would be kind of off and I thought my watch was acting up. Things were taking me longer than I expected which kind of got in my head a little bit. The course was marked incorrectly. I thought it but it was confirmed to me in the end when another runner mentioned we hit 10 miles almost half a mile before the finish.

The Texas 10 turned out to be the Texas 10.5 miles. This didn’t really bother me. I’m just glad I knew that was the case at the end. I finished in 1:54:32. It’s not my fastest 10 mile race but this was the hilliest and it was 10.5 miles which would take a bit off the time so that’s pretty much close to my normal time even with the hills (if the course would have been marked accurately).

The food situation after the race wasn’t my type of thing. There was kolaches with ham and cheese or sausage and cheese. I passed on those and just ate a banana.

All in all this was a great race so let me break it down for you.

Texas 10 Huntsville

Pros:
Cute finisher medal.
Great race shirt and hat.
Friendly people.
Small race feel.
Pretty views.
Race day packet pickup.

Cons:
Hills, hills and hills.
Course marking wrong.

Verdict: I really enjoyed it and now I’m thinking about signing up the Texas 10 Katy on November 1, 2015. I think it should be another great event.

Big thanks to my husband for doing all the driving on scary two lane highways to get me there on time and back home safely in some horrible weather.

Do you care if race courses on inaccurate?

Race recap: Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon 2015

Race recap: Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon 2015

Spoiler alert: This is going to be my recap of the Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon by Advil.  This year was different because there was a 5K and 1K on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday.  I am really bummed that I didn’t run the 5K on Saturday because it looked like a great time. This past weekend was meant for my 20 miler so I decided to split up my run.  Not ideal but it was what would work for me. I needed to run at least 7 miles on Saturday morning so a 5K wasn’t going to…

Race Recap: Habanero Hundred 50K

Race Recap: Habanero Hundred 50K

I spent the past weekend running through the woods with some totally amazing people. Here’s my video: We did the Habanero Hundred ultra that started at noon.  It was a fun fun time. It’s really about the people that make an event so special.  I do spend a lot of time racing by myself and I always forget how great it is just to be around friends.  (Yep, that’s right.  I said it.) I really needed this to get back on track. Our group had 3 relay teams and 4 people doing the individual events. If you’re from Texas, you know…

Race Recap: Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon

Race Recap: Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon

If you didn’t read my Rock n Roll San Diego 5K recap you definitely should go back to start there.  The Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon was part of my quest and was my 11th state to capture on the way.  I was very excited to be running California and to spend time with my best friend, Missy, who was running the half marathon. It was an early wake up call for us because we had to catch the coaster to the start line.  RnR San Diego staff did an excellent job of organizing transportation.  Everything went smoothly from…

Race Recap: RnR San Diego 5K

This should have been up ages ago, but I got sick the week I came back and then this week happened. We’ll just consider it a Throwback Thursday to an old race. I had a really fun time in San Diego because I got to spend some time with my best friend. This was her first trip to the West Coast! We were there together to run the Rock N Roll San Diego Half Marathon and Marathon! Saturday morning, we ran the Rock n Roll San Diego 5K at Balboa Park. We had to pick up our stuff that morning.…

Race Recap: Horse Capital Marathon

Race Recap: Horse Capital Marathon

Running the Kentucky Ale Horse Capital Marathon was a biggie for me.  This is the race that finally got me qualified for the 50 States Marathon Club. I decided at the last minute that it was doable and I asked around to see if anyone would want to go…and bam someone wanted to go.  The dream became a reality and we road tripped to Kentucky. We stopped in Memphis on the way there which was about 8 hours in but I wanted to stop to show Lauren where I attended college.  No pictures of Ole Miss, which we probably should…

Race Recap: Brazos Bend 50K

Race Recap: Brazos Bend 50K

Saturday, I ran the Brazos Bend 50K with a lot of my running group. We had a good group of people doing the 50 miler, 50K, 25K and 10K. This course is known for running with the alligators. We went on Friday evening to pick up my packet and hear the trail brief. But I missed the trail briefing because we got stuck in traffic. People had been out there and took tons of pictures of the gators roaming the course. My race started at 7am which was an hour after the 50 milers but I was there to see…

Race Recap: Garmin in the Land of Oz Marathon

Happy Marathon Monday!  Today is the Boston Marathon and every runner is glued to the television. I had to watch it on my iPad at work. One day I hope to run Boston but qualifying is not in my sights or anywhere attainable right now.  I’ll get there one day though.  Since it’s Marathon Monday, I thought it was only fitting that I share my race recap of the Garmin in The Land of Oz recap with you today! I traveled to Olathe, KS to run this marathon. The weather wasn’t forecasted to be the best and I was a…

Race recap: Davy Crockett Bear Chase Marathon

Hello marathon #20.  Yes folks, yesterday I ran my 20th marathon.  That’s kind of crazy, right?  The marathon wasn’t easy for me.  I struggled but I kept fighting.  It was just something I needed to do. Willie was nice enough to play chauffeur for me on Saturday morning to drive to Groveton,TX.  It was a very early morning because he had to wake up at 3 am for a 4 am leave time to make it to the race at 6 am for packet pickup.  We got there a quarter to 6 and I have to thank my husband for…

Race Recap: Austin Rattler 25K

Race Recap: Austin Rattler 25K

I did it!  I did a trail run and I enjoyed.  I made myself do this race because I’m afraid of the trails.  It’s very different than road racing and I need to get a little bit more comfortable in this type of environment. I’ve come a long way since my first trail race and I’ve noticed an improvement each time I get out there. The Austin Rattler 25K was about pushing past my “boundaries” and forgetting the fear.  The Austin Rattler is apart of the Leadville race series and I signed up on a whim.  Headsweats made this day…

Race Recap: Zooma Women’s Series Texas Half Marathon

On Saturday I ran the Zooma Women’s half marathon at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop, TX! I ran this race last year and did it again this year for the experience. I had a great time hanging out with my friends before so why not do it again? This race is all about hanging out with your friends! I wasn’t really running this for time because it was all about hanging out with my friends and having a good time. Kind of odd though cause none of them ran the half marathon so that meant they were waiting…
