Transformation Tuesday: Falling into running

I never thought I would be a runner. When we started our weight loss journey, I definitely didn’t think it would be something I would fall into or even love. I started running because I needed something a little bit more fast pace than walking and that slowly turned into a love for hitting the pavement.

The only place I would run to before was the couch to catch the latest episode of my favorite show or to the kitchen table to eat. It’s sad to say, but that is the truth.

I can’t really explain to you why the change when it happened. Things kind of just fell into place at the right time. Timing was everything. My mind was right and I was committed to the cause. It was time to make the change and I went for it. I took the leap not really knowing if it would work or what would happen. It probably was a little easier to take the first steps knowing I had someone by myside but that’s not the only reason why I took the steps.

I was tired of being looked at for my size when I walked into a room. I was tired of being judged by the foods I was eating when I did settle down to eat. I was tired of not being able to wear the clothes I wanted to wear. I was afraid that my love of travel would eventually have to end because I was growing too large to fit in seat. This picture from above was taken in 2009 in San Francisco and that was the first time I had to ask for a seat belt extender. When I had to ask, my heart sank just a little bit. I knew I was growing out of control.

I was eating too much and not being active. It was time to make a change. My continued success in the weight loss/maintenance mode game has come from running. It keeps me excited and interested. Running offers me balance (even though I’m sure a lot of you think there’s not a balance with it). Running gives me something to focus on and keeps me moving, literally! The best part about running is being able to share my story AND hear others.  I get “you’re an inspiration” but I am inspired by so many people along the way that I never would have met without running.  My life has changed because I run.  I am a better and stronger person.

Running has helped my mental health in so many ways. I have learned to deal with stress better.  I have learned to channel excess energy into other things instead of destructive behavior.  Running has helped me gain the confidence that I never had in the past by giving me the strength to know I am capable of things that may not come easy to me.  Finishing a run is a mental feat in itself but I know I can power through to the end.  Running has helped me believe that I can do anything if I put my mind to it.  I now see things through until the end.  Physically running keeps me in shape, but mentally it keeps me strong.

I would really like to share my running/weight loss journey with some of you. I know running is not for everyone but it’s something that I love. Have you wanted to check running a marathon off your bucket list? Are you looking for something to jump start your weight loss or want to add something different in your fitness plan? Come run a marathon with me and Willie in Chicago! We are running for Team Healthy Kids which is a great cause and you’ll get to run Chicago. There’s still time to sign up and run a marathon with me. I’ll run it step for step with you if you want. We can bond over 26.2 miles and have a great time. If you’re interested please e-mail me.

Hiding unhealthy choices and back on meal prep

Hiding unhealthy choices and back on meal prep

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been on the move.  It’s been a BUSY few weeks and I haven’t really been home to meal prep.  There was a week that I prepped for two weeks but that only happened one.  I’ve been traveling and missing the grocery store trips.  Everything hasn’t been tip top shape.  And I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t been eating the best food either. A couple of weeks ago Willie and I slammed a whole pizza and enjoyed it…but I think my pizza need may have been met that day. The picture above is not the…

Race Recap: Tobacco Road Marathon

Race Recap: Tobacco Road Marathon

I collected state #17 in North Carolina this weekend when I ran the Tobacco Road Marathon in Cary, NC. This was definitely a bucket list race for me from before I even started marathoning.  This was just a half marathon I wanted to complete but then I started running the 50 states and I knew this would be my North Carolina race.  The entire time I was running I couldn’t believe I was actually running the race. The only bad thing about this race was it happened on the day of the time change.  I had already lost an hour…

#TourDeAngie: Weight loss and alcohol.

Thursday night I made my trek to state #17, North Carolina, for the Tobacco Road Marathon which is tomorrow. I had a late flight and didn’t get to my hotel until after midnight because I lost an hour. Oh, did I forget to mention that I lost an hour and will lose another tomorrow due to DST? Oh well, at least the race starts later due to the time change. Yesterday I picked up my packet. I’m never available for first day packet pickup so I thought I should go. It was a small expo but it was nice. There…

Race Recap: Snickers Marathon – Albany, GA

Race Recap: Snickers Marathon – Albany, GA

I ventured down some serious back roads to Albany, GA to capture state #16 on my marathon quest.  The destination was the Snickers Marathon and Half Marathon.  I decided on this race after finding out I wouldn’t be able to run the Georgia Marathon because I already signed up for another race.  I am so glad I double checked my calendar and decided to run this race. From my town, Albany is 10 hrs and not really a convient place to fly.  There are no airports within two hours of this place so I thought it would be best to…

Race Recap: Route 66 Marathon Weekend

Race Recap: Route 66 Marathon Weekend

What a wonderful weekend I had in Tulsa at the Route 66 Marathon weekend.  I didn’t know what to expect going to Oklahoma because I had never been.  All I knew was this was one of those bucket list races for someone trying to run the 50 states.  This was my last state to capture for the year but not my last marathon.  Read more about my quest in another post if you want to know more.  I am proud to say that I ran marathon #29 and captured state #15 on my journey. Willie and I took a road…

Race Recap: The Pensacola Marathon

Race Recap: The Pensacola Marathon

The Pensacola Marathon was on November 8, 2015.  I decided to run this race on a whim because I had to cancel my trip to Las Vegas because I couldn’t miss work due to my mom’s impending surgery.  I needed to meet my state goal and it was completely last minute.  That is the reason I ended up running a half marathon the day before this race. I got in the car and drove to my best friend Mandie’s house so that we could venture to Florida together.  The drive wasn’t that long.  It was something like an hour and…

Why meal prep hasn’t been a priority

Why meal prep hasn’t been a priority

The month of October has flown by and you may have noticed something was missing from blog.  There has been a noticable absence of meal prepping or cooking going on in my life.  I just wasn’t home long enough to get make it priority.  I spent half the month packing for trips, running and in airports.  The meals I made were quick and easy and didn’t require much prep. Sadly, most of those meals came from the freezer or out of a can.  It was just what worked for me during this time.  The time between trips would sometimes just…

Race Recap: Rock n Roll St. Louis Half …

Race Recap: Rock n Roll St. Louis Half Marathon

The recap is late, but it’s still worthy of a read.  I ran the Rock n Roll St. Louis Half Marathon on October 18 and it was something special.  Last year when I ran this race, I set a half marathon PR.  That did not happen this year because I ran the Kansas City Marathon the day before.  This half was purely for fun. I was espeically excited because I got to see some of my favorite Team Chocolate Milk teammates.  I hadn’t seen them since last year so it was a nice treat.  And I finally got to meet…

Race Recap: Kansas City Marathon

Race Recap: Kansas City Marathon

The one thing I will take away from this trip is Kansas City is a beautiful city. My expectations were low and I wasn’t expecting much out of this marathon after not meeting my expectations in Chicago. I orginally signed up for the Kansas City Marathon after finding out that Rock n Roll St. Louis would no longer be a marathon. In a panic, I went looking for another race because Missouri was an imporant part of the plan this year. Luckily, this race was the day before Rock n Roll St. Louis! Things happen for a reason and I…

#TourdeAngie has begun with my airport food hacks

I had big things planned for the blog this week but then life got really busy.  It was launch week at the gym which is always a great time. But that also means things get really busy with teaching extra classes.  Then my full time job was hectic because I was trying to do 6 days worth of work in 4 days.  The blog and vlog kind of got no attention this week.  Luckily I have some down time in the airport right now between my flights. I first had to eat my salad in the bag.  Why in the…
