Break out of the workout rut

Hello gym workout rutt. I don’t know what’s been going on but lately I’ve been less than thrilled with my workouts. It’s been pretty rough so I’ve been trying to change some things up. Going through a rut is to be expected, right? We’ve been going to the same gym for three years now so it’s probably only natural to feel the “been there, done that feeling” we’ve both been experiencing.

I know we’re not the only ones who feel that way. The past couple of weeks I’ve been trying to limit my gym time and try some other things too. Some circumstances make it a bit harder for me, but I gotta do what I gotta do to keep my workouts fresh and exciting.

Everyone has been going gung ho on the workouts since the beginning of the year, but we’re almost to March. The newness of new year’s goals have kind of worn off and it’s been cold in most places across the country. That kind of makes it hard to stay motivated for your workout, so I thought I would offer you some tips are getting out of your gym/workout rut:

Workout rut

1. Go to the gym with a friend. My gym is offering bring a friend Friday. I think that’s a great idea because that’s a new way to spice up an old workout. Sometimes it’s annoying to hear people talking through their workout or being the chatty Kathy on the treadmill for an hour, but people are doing what they need to do to get through their workout. Sometimes people just need that social boost to make it a fun experience for them and this might just be a great way to keep you motivated.
2. If you’re strictly a machine gym person, try a group fitness class. If you’re a regular group fitness person, try a different class. It’s important to change up our workouts so we don’t get bored AND we challenge different muscles. If you’re always walking on the treadmill, why not try a Zumba class? Having a stressed out day? Why not try kickboxing? Adding just one new workout in a week can make a big difference.

#running in my new running clothes. Matchy matchy is my Wal-Mart special. I love the shorts! What's your fav piece of #workout clothing? #fitfam #fitness #runchat #instarunners
3. Buy some new workout clothes. If you look good, you feel good and who doesn’t like to shop? I’m not telling you to go break the bank on your new clothes because you really don’t have to do it. Yesterday, I went on a run wearing some new clothes and it kind of made a difference. My attitude changed and was excited about running (after the first mile).
4. Take a day or two off from working out to do something else. Scheduling your active time everyday is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle, but also scheduling time for other things that you like to do is just as important. Read a book, listen to some music, go shopping, paint, go for a walk (instead of a run), play with your kids…whatever it is take the time away from working out to do something else you like to do. It will give you a big boost mentally and give your body a break so you’ll feel refreshed the next time you go to gym.
5. Try some new tunes. Most people workout with music. Hit the iTunes store and refresh those workout playlists. Music sets the tone for what you’re going to accomplish and hearing the same songs over and over again might be taking a toll on you mentally during your workout. I love using Spotify because I can get new music all the time without worrying about having to purchase individual songs. It might be something you want to look into.

Not running all the marathons

Not running all the marathons

Last week I was prepping all week to run The Austin Marathon. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy or fast but I just wanted to run it. I kept referring to the weekend as a “shit show” but I was really excited for it. As excited that I was to run that marathon, I knew I probably shouldn’t. It nagged at me all week which made me really think about the situation. Running the marathons is fun and I love to do it. But it is incredibly taxing on the body and probably not something I need to…

Exercising is the LEAST offensive thing I’ve …

Exercising is the LEAST offensive thing I’ve done to my body

A study by the American College of Cardiology came out suggesting the amount I run will increase my chance of death but it’s at the same rate of people who sit on the couch. The National guideline suggests 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. For me, this isn’t a big deal. Teaching two of my classes is 90 minutes and we all know I work out more than that. I haven’t even made a dent into the 150 minutes with running. But even if I wasn’t running, would more than 150 mins of exercising be harmful to my health?…

My dog took me for a run

My dog took me for a run

This week has been all about getting back into a routine. All the running has kind of messed up my schedule because I’ve had to recover and do it all over again. Guess what y’all? I’m on a two weekend break from running. That means I’m able to get my strength training in. Too bad it’s totally making me hate push ups. Willie told me that you should change your workout up every 2 months or something like that so your body doesn’t get use to it. I really wasn’t feeling it this morning, but I went. That means I…

Staying safe when you take your workouts outside

Staying safe when you take your workouts outside

Last week a woman was running in the wee hours of the morning and she was attacked. Her attacker tried to pull her in the bushes but she went all karate kid on him and got away. I don’t know if I could have done that. I can tell you one thing, I don’t want to find out. This terrifies me because I’ve been known to go running at 3:30 am! I did this without telling my husband where I would be running and I would be gone for hours at a time. He never would have known if I…

Staying healthy while staying busy

Staying healthy while staying busy

I’ve been a little MIA this week.  It’s been a busy busy week with my full-time and part-time job.  I haven’t been doing a good job at keeping you informed with what I’ve been doing. First off, it’s launch week at the gym which keeps me busy.  That means more teaching in my schedule.  It’s kind of a bummer I didn’t have enough time to go to all the classes I wanted to attend.  I’ll just pick it up next week.  This morning I got to team teach with my buddy. She made our shirts which were so cute! I’ve…

Does the journey ever really end?

Does the journey ever really end?

This day in 2011, Willie and I decided that it was time for a change.  Together we took the steps to lose weight and transform our lifestyle.  This morning I woke up to tell Willie today was the day and he didn’t remember.  I take that as a good thing because that means we’ve come a long way. I still remember everything about that day.  The conversation we had and how I really wanted to get barbecue that day for dinner. I know it sounds silly, but I still remember.  The next day Willie and I went to the gym…

Enjoying the Christmas season with a bike ride

Enjoying the Christmas season with a bike ride

This week has been filled with holiday things.  We had our run group Secret Santa on Monday and tonight we had the Christmas Light Bike Ride.  I was a little worried that it was going to rain tonight and we wouldn’t be able to ride.  It was misty, but I still made it.  It was really hard to see. It all started with Sainta Clause.  Who Dat! Dancing #santas! A video posted by Angela (@angelabeatfat) on Dec 12, 2014 at 4:48pm PST And then there were dancing Santas. I had to get my picture taken with one of the dancing…

Christmas presents for your health minded person

Next week is Christmas.  Have you done your shopping?  I haven’t done much shopping at all.  I should probably get on it.  Just in case you’re still searching for the perfect gift or stocking stuffer, I thought I would go ahead and put my list out there.  All the lists out there seem to be the same: running shoes, running fuel, blah blah blah.  Here is my list of great gifts for your fitness/health junkie friends: The price buster: An iPod.  I know you can listen to music on  your phone and most people do.  But I think it’s great…

It’s time to get your HIIT on!

It’s time to get your HIIT on!

It’s time to change up those workouts people.  When I feel like I need a change, I take a HIIT. HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training.  It burns A LOT of calories and gets in everything that you need.  Cardio and strength in one killer workout so it’s one of the best.  I have a love/hate relationships with HIIT workouts because I know the workouts are going to be intense so I hate them.  I love them because I definitely see improvement in my body and fitness after doing these workouts for a while.  The key is to stick with…
