Interesting read about calories and strength training

When we started the weight loss journey it was all about calories.  We counted those suckers like we counted pennies out at the register.  We used Lose It! to help track our calorie intake.  In the beginning we had a lot of calories to eat, but as the weight came off the calories we were allowed inched down.  I remember the day my calories reached 1300.  I remember struggling during that time because working out as much as I did and just eating 1300 calories wasn’t working.

My friend Aimee posted a link from Sophieologie about 1200 calories and I thought it was brilliant! I could sit here and blog about this but in the end I know it wouldn’t do this blog post any justice.  I want you to read my blog but I also want to provide you with good content.  In this case, she got it right and sometimes that is all that matters.

My best advice to people is to listen to your body, don’t get trapped by an app telling you exactly what to do, stay active and eat as clean as you can 80% of the time so you can enjoy that 20%!

I am sharing this with you because I’ve struggled with this issue about calories coming in and the calories I expend every day.  People often ask how many calories I allow myself to eat.  I use to be a serious calorie counter because it was what I needed to do at the time.  I’m not so rigid about it anymore because 1. I know I’m making healthy choices most of the time and 2. I am a very active lady!

In the defense of the Biggest Loser Winner

In the defense of the Biggest Loser Winner

Last night the winner of The Biggest Loser was chosen and people don’t seem to be happy.  I will admit, I don’t watch the show.  I really don’t like how the show doesn’t take it’s moment to educate the viewers on losing the weight, it strictly about the game.  In the end, it’s all about it being a reality show and game and there’s nothing wrong with that.  I know a lot of people look to show for a source of inspiration and motivation so I just wish there was just a little bit more education going on sometimes. So…

The deal with changes

The deal with changes

Change is a part of life that we can’t really avoid.  Things change on a constant basis, including the weather.  I can’t believe we were hit with two ice events in 6 days here in southeast Texas.  I was cooped up in the house for a couple of days which really gave me a chance to think about the message I want to send out to the world.  Things changed for us a when we decided to lose the weight, our appearance changed,  our life changed, our activities changed and all of the sudden people are asking us to speak about…

Playing catch up

Playing catch up

I’ve seriously fallen behind in life since Willie has been sick. Last week I split my time between the hospital, work and home.  I was totally out of my routine.  I didn’t get to work out that much and I was seriously tired.  No matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to get some sleep.  I know a lot of it was stress induced, but I was really really tired.  Good thing Willie’s hospital visit occurred the week after the marathon because I probably needed to rest days. The one thing I learned is the hospital doesn’t really serve healthy…

It’s our anniversary

It’s our anniversary

Four years ago I married my best friend!  It was a very cold day in January but our hearts were filled with love and joy as we celebrated the day with family and friends. Willie and I have been on an amazing journey together and I know we still have more to conquer out there in the world!  On our first anniversary our gift to each other was the commitment to prolonging our lives by changing our lifestyle.  Many people didn’t understand, many people criticized, many people doubted us BUT we pushed on TOGETHER to make our lives better. Every…

Dealing with maintenance mode

Dealing with maintenance mode

People are very curious to see if I’m still trying to lose weight.  I am here to answer that question: no! I’m in maintenance mode and I’ve been that way for almost two years now, I think.  Two years seems like a really long time.  It took me 13 months to hit my first goal weight and I continued to shed the pounds after that, not intentionally but I did still have more to lose.  At some point my body just stopped and that is how I knew it was time to maintain. It was a hard switch to make…

The deal with our body image

The deal with our body image

Excuse me as I give myself a pep talk about body image. Some of you may have the same problem as me and others may not, but I do have a problem. In the car on the way back from Memphis, I was reading the news and I found this clip of Jennifer Lawrence telling us to “screw those people” who want to make us into someone else. It was actually a refreshing moment to watch and made me love this woman so much more. How can you not love the psychotic girl from Silver Linings Playbook or Katniss Everdeen?…

Keeping it real for the holidays

Keeping it real for the holidays

The holidays are a hard time for people who are food conscious.  Just because I lost all this weight doesn’t mean I don’t have issues with food and right now I just feel like my eating hasn’t been that good.  My eating habits probably aren’t as bad as I’m making it seem; it’s just that I’m eating foods that I usually don’t eat.  I am desperately trying to get rid of the leftovers in the house so I can put the holiday behind me.  I hate wasting money and throwing away food is just wasting money to me.  This morning…

I am a Black Fitness Today Ambassador and …

I am a Black Fitness Today Ambassador and I signed the pledge!

I am proud to announce I’ve been selected to be a Black Fitness Today Ambassador! Among many other great things getting our story out there has done, this is probably one of the most important things for ME to be able to do. I want to share our story to show people you can lose (and keep off) weight by just changing your lifestyle. You don’t need a magic pill or diet to make the change, all you need to do is change your habits. African Americans have the high rates of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and many more things…

Yes, we were on The Rachael Ray Show!

Yes, we were on The Rachael Ray Show!

Keeping a secret is very hard so I’m very glad The Rachael Ray Show episode finally aired! I don’t know how it happened or why it happened, but we are truly thankful for the experience! Many great things have happened to us this year, but this has probably been the most life changing thing. Why was it so life changing? Being on television and visiting NYC are great things, but this experience was life changing because it was a huge wake up call for us. We lost the weight and have managed to keep it off but everything else was…
