Race Recap: Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon

If you didn’t read my Rock n Roll San Diego 5K recap you definitely should go back to start there.  The Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon was part of my quest and was my 11th state to capture on the way.  I was very excited to be running California and to spend time with my best friend, Missy, who was running the half marathon.

It was an early wake up call for us because we had to catch the coaster to the start line.  RnR San Diego staff did an excellent job of organizing transportation.  Everything went smoothly from taking the coaster and the shuttles to the start line.  There were no problems.

It's time to rock and roll San Diego style! #rnrsd #werunsocial #teamchocolatemilk #running #26point2 #webeatfat

We arrived in plenty time to get our bags to gear check and not be too rushed before the start.  The marathon started at 6:15am and the half started at 6:50am.

Missy was a little cold so she became a preppy runner.  She needed to wear her cardigan before the start of the race.  I enjoyed teasing her!

When it was my time, I said my goodbyes and headed to the corrals. Everything was good until they said everyone who was running the marathon needed to be in the corral right now or they couldn’t run the marathon.  People panicked and started pushing their way to the front.  I took an elbow to the chest by someone who was scared and it kind of knocked the wind out of me.  It was all a misunderstanding because people didn’t realize they just meant you needed to be at the start line at that moment, if not you would be forced to run the half marathon.  The marathon and half marathon courses were different for this race.

I started off the race a little cautious.  It was kind of humid and nothing like the day before.  I didn’t have any goal here but to finish.  I thought I would try to do a 5:15 marathon and stayed with that pace for the most part.  I did stop to take a lot of pictures though.  I was having a good time and thought running in California might not happen again so I wanted to enjoy the moment.

I stopped everywhere.  I stopped in Old Town with the mariachi band.  I stopped at the Little Italy sign.  I stopped at Mission Bay.  It was a great time.  I was about 10 minutes ahead of pace so I was doing really well.  I decided to run with my hydration pack because I had a moldy bottle incident the night before.  No matter how much I cleaned those bottles, I knew I wouldn’t be able to get past it.  I ditched the race belt and ran with the hydration pack.  Thank goodness for Willie because he made me bring that pack just in case.

I was having a great time.  The sun started peaking through the clouds around 10:30 am which made it a little hotter.  It also didn’t help that is about the time I hit the highway section of this course.  The course was hilly but nothing I didn’t think I could handle.  Everyone kept telling me to look out for this one highway section. I was happy I was staying above pace until I got to the highway section.  It was the worst. It was one big continuous HILL.  At the point, I lost my pace because I just walked.  Everyone was walking. Besides the hill, the highway was slanted which would have been murder on anyones IT band.

I really hated that I lost my time but it was really about having fun.  The moment I was able to run again, I picked up the pace.  It was warmer but I didn’t mind.  This girl was fueled by fig newtons and I was ready to run.  And then we hit the tunnel again with the DJ.  It was nice to have a little bit more fun before the race ended.  The tunnel had flashing lights that went with the music.

RnR San Diego Marathon Weekend

I finished the race in 5:36:49.  By the time I reached the end, I was spent.  I was definitely ready for some lowfat chocolate milk.  It was definitely well deserved! I’ve been taking my race recovery a lot more seriously.  It has to right carb to protein ratio for recovery. This has been a LONG marathon haul for me and this was a great finish for my marathon travels.

RnR San Diego Marathon Weekend
After I finished, I went to find Missy who met her goal. I am wicked proud of her for even attempting to do this. I got all teary eyed when I told her this but I really mean it. It’s really great to see people doing things they never thought they would do.

This was a very pretty run with excellent course support.  This race exceeded my expectations.  I really got to see a lot of the city and the people were so nice.  The down point was running on the freeway for almost 3 miles.  This is the largest Rock n Roll race put on so it was really nice to see how efficient everything was.

The medal was very nice…

And I got a great marathon finishers jacket.  I didn’t like I had to walk a mile after running a marathon and go up a flight of stairs to get it, but I guess in the end it doesn’t matter.  It was a great race that I would recommend to everyone.

When we were done, we took a pedicab down to Little Italy to eat some pasta!  It was a great time!

Race Recap: RnR San Diego 5K

This should have been up ages ago, but I got sick the week I came back and then this week happened. We’ll just consider it a Throwback Thursday to an old race. I had a really fun time in San Diego because I got to spend some time with my best friend. This was her first trip to the West Coast! We were there together to run the Rock N Roll San Diego Half Marathon and Marathon! Saturday morning, we ran the Rock n Roll San Diego 5K at Balboa Park. We had to pick up our stuff that morning.…

Race Recap: Horse Capital Marathon

Race Recap: Horse Capital Marathon

Running the Kentucky Ale Horse Capital Marathon was a biggie for me.  This is the race that finally got me qualified for the 50 States Marathon Club. I decided at the last minute that it was doable and I asked around to see if anyone would want to go…and bam someone wanted to go.  The dream became a reality and we road tripped to Kentucky. We stopped in Memphis on the way there which was about 8 hours in but I wanted to stop to show Lauren where I attended college.  No pictures of Ole Miss, which we probably should…

Race Recap: Brazos Bend 50K

Race Recap: Brazos Bend 50K

Saturday, I ran the Brazos Bend 50K with a lot of my running group. We had a good group of people doing the 50 miler, 50K, 25K and 10K. This course is known for running with the alligators. We went on Friday evening to pick up my packet and hear the trail brief. But I missed the trail briefing because we got stuck in traffic. People had been out there and took tons of pictures of the gators roaming the course. My race started at 7am which was an hour after the 50 milers but I was there to see…

Race Recap: Garmin in the Land of Oz Marathon

Happy Marathon Monday!  Today is the Boston Marathon and every runner is glued to the television. I had to watch it on my iPad at work. One day I hope to run Boston but qualifying is not in my sights or anywhere attainable right now.  I’ll get there one day though.  Since it’s Marathon Monday, I thought it was only fitting that I share my race recap of the Garmin in The Land of Oz recap with you today! I traveled to Olathe, KS to run this marathon. The weather wasn’t forecasted to be the best and I was a…

Race recap: Davy Crockett Bear Chase Marathon

Hello marathon #20.  Yes folks, yesterday I ran my 20th marathon.  That’s kind of crazy, right?  The marathon wasn’t easy for me.  I struggled but I kept fighting.  It was just something I needed to do. Willie was nice enough to play chauffeur for me on Saturday morning to drive to Groveton,TX.  It was a very early morning because he had to wake up at 3 am for a 4 am leave time to make it to the race at 6 am for packet pickup.  We got there a quarter to 6 and I have to thank my husband for…

Race Recap: Austin Rattler 25K

Race Recap: Austin Rattler 25K

I did it!  I did a trail run and I enjoyed.  I made myself do this race because I’m afraid of the trails.  It’s very different than road racing and I need to get a little bit more comfortable in this type of environment. I’ve come a long way since my first trail race and I’ve noticed an improvement each time I get out there. The Austin Rattler 25K was about pushing past my “boundaries” and forgetting the fear.  The Austin Rattler is apart of the Leadville race series and I signed up on a whim.  Headsweats made this day…

Race Recap: Zooma Women’s Series Texas Half Marathon

On Saturday I ran the Zooma Women’s half marathon at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop, TX! I ran this race last year and did it again this year for the experience. I had a great time hanging out with my friends before so why not do it again? This race is all about hanging out with your friends! I wasn’t really running this for time because it was all about hanging out with my friends and having a good time. Kind of odd though cause none of them ran the half marathon so that meant they were waiting…

Race Recap: RnR Dallas 5K and Half Marathon 2015

There are a couple of a races I do every year and this is one of them. I had big expectations for this race because it’s always the race I PR. That didn’t happen this year, but at least I had a great time. Willie and I ran the 5K on Saturday morning which was part of the Rock n Roll Series Remix challenge. Run a race each day and earn the extra bling. This was the first year for the remix challenge in Dallas. It wasn’t the prettiest 5K because we ran through a parking lot and around the…

Race Recap: The Gusher Marathon

Race Recap: The Gusher Marathon

The Gusher Marathon, Half marathon and 5k is the big race in my hometown and it’s a great race. I take the race for granted because it’s local and it’s not the big travel tada. But that doesn’t take away from the greatness of this race. I was very excited because my mom came out to do the 5k. Plus Missy, Tyson and Emmy came out to run too. I hate I didn’t get to see them start or finish though. The Gusher is a double loop course.  It killed me mentally last year but it didn’t this year.  The double…

Race Recap: The Little Rock Marathon

Race Recap: The Little Rock Marathon

I running behind on my race recaps.  I thought I better get this Little Rock recap up before it’s too late.  Once again it was pretty cold in Little Rock!  I did the 5K on Saturday and it was 20 degrees outside.  All the fountains were frozen over and there were some slick spots on the street.  I didn’t get any pictures because it was too cold for that.  I’m a wimp. I ran the 5K in 28:41 and got 3rd in my age group.  Too bad they didn’t give out age group awards because I definitely would have had…
