Frozen vs. Fresh: The Produce debate

Back in the day, I use to buy everything fresh and just prep the crap of out of it.  Now I don’t really have the time to do that with the little one running around.  But I also don’t know how to get my veggies in the way I want them buying them fresh.  My broccoli was always too hard, or I didn’t cook the green beans long enough.  There was always a problem.

And then I started buying frozen vegetables.  I never thought this was a problem until there was a recall on some frozen vegetables at my grocery store and started reading the comments.  People were mean.  Someone called people lazy for getting frozen produce and said people like “you” were ruining America.  I was offended because I was just trying to get my real food in just like everyone else.

Is it better to buy fresh vs. frozen?

I did a little research to get you started, but I must admit there is a lot of science here.  I don’t claim to know any of that stuff, I just wanted to know what the people were saying.  I welcome you to dive deeper into the subject to find out the information that is most important to you.  I was searching for the loss of nutrients in buy fresh vs. frozen foods.

There has been little information showing that buying fresh vs. frozen foods sacrificing the nutrients.  There is not across the board answer to this because it really does depend on the products you’re buying fresh or frozen.. There were different trade-offs in favor of frozen and fresh foods.  During my reading, I learned there is a nutrient loss in fresh produce anyway because the nutrients are strongest at harvest.  By the time it makes it to our store, it could be days after harvest so who really knows what you’re getting.,

Here’s some of the information I learned:

  • Foods with high amounts of fat soluble nutrients are best frozen because they are more stable during processing.  This means carrots, leafy greens, and broccoli is a good bet for buying frozen.
  • It’s best to buy produce that is high in Vitamins B & C fresh.  Buying berries, citrus fruits, cabbage, and bell pepper fresh will retain the nutrients you are looking for and might be best for cooking fresh.
  • Most nutrients we are seeking from our produce aren’t affected by the freezing like fiber and iron.
  • I saw it many times that you should not buy frozen cabbage because it will completely demolish the nutritional benefits for the vegetable.  But I don’t know if I’ve ever seen frozen cabbage?  Have you?  And I don’t think that would be good when it unthawed? It will probably be mushy, Maybe that’s just me and maybe I’m trying to add a bit of humor here.
  • Boiling or steaming is the best way to cook your frozen vegetables for keeping the antioxidant levels high.
  • Cook your frozen produce with little to no water at a low temperature to ensure you’re getting all the nutritional benefits.

My take away is that it’s okay to buy your frozen produce with some exceptions, like the cabbage.  Sometimes I just need the extra help to make sure I’m getting the foods that will fuel my body.  I know the whole discussion of steaming your food in the plastic bags and how we should stop ingesting so much plastic in our diets. You can steam without those plastic bags in your microwave.  We have a steamer that works great.

There are the initial concerns because these frozen items are still going through a processing plant where listeria becomes a problem.  Nothing is really safe but those are things that are out of our control.  Just be cautious and aware of the products you are buying.

The frozen produce that I am most likely to buy are carrots, broccoli (lots of it), turnip/collard greens, spinach, and corn.  I only buy frozen fruits for smoothie purposes.  I have been buying frozen cauliflower but now I still need to research because I did read how that is one of the best fresh vegetables.  There is a lot of information on this subject and I encourage you to find out more information.

I don’t think you should worry about buying fresh or frozen produce in the long run.  The most important thing is that we’re adding these things into our daily diet and sometimes, this is what we need to do to make it work.  Explore the subject to find out what is most important to you.

What produce are you most likely to buy frozen?

Broccoli salad and new meal prep help

Broccoli salad and new meal prep help

I’m still talking about that broccoli salad folks.  I don’t feel like I can appropriately move on with life until I tell you about the broccoli salad and what variation I decided on.  There are many variations on a broccoli salad which opened my eyes to this salad.  Broccolli salad is kind of BIG deal.  I found one that would work for me. I finally decided on the Best Broccoli Salad recipe from Mom on Time Out. I’m not sure why this appealed to me so much.  Maybe because these are ingredients I keep in the house and I wouldn’t…

That time I burned crockpot lasagna

That time I burned crockpot lasagna

I love making stuff in the crockpot because it’s a great way to get a home cooked meal without all the fuss.  That was until I decided I was going to make crockpot lasagna. I was intrigued when I was fell down the rabbit hole of Pinterest and found a crock pot veggie lasagna recipe. The great thing about the crockpot is setting and forgetting, but this time I feel like it was a little too much work. I was highly skeptical on Sunday while I was making this. I even posted on Instagram stories I wasn’t sure I would be…

Meal prep this week: Maple Dijon chicken

Meal prep this week: Maple Dijon chicken

I haven’t really been talking about my meal prep on the blog lately. I know it’s bad because people want to know about the meal prep. I haven’t really talked about meal prep in a long time but that doesn’t mean I’m not doing it. Meal prep has become a little less high maintenance these days, but it’s still getting done. I’m not fancy. I don’t create recipes on my own. If I’m doing some creating, I’m just throwing stuff together we have in the fridge and making it work. There’s nothing creative happening in my kitchen. I know the…

RIP Panera BBQ Chicken Salad

RIP Panera BBQ Chicken Salad

I received some sad news yesterday sitting in the drive-thru at Panera Bread.  I ordered the same thing I’ve been eating for a while, the BBQ Chicken Salad.  Instead of hearing, please drive around, I heard some chilling news.  The salad is going off the menu.  This made my heart sink. This is my go-to order. I don’t have to wait forever in line and it’s always there when I forgot my lunch or waited too late to eat. Now it’s gone. I’m a creature of habit. I find one thing and I stick with it. I’m loyal to the…

Three things to overcome during weight loss journey

Three things to overcome during weight loss journey

Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows the process isn’t easy. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to lose 30 pounds or 130 pounds. There are just some things that will get your frustrated along the way. I’m currently trying to lose my pregnancy weight so this is something that is fresh on my mind and I thought it would be a great topic to talk about on the blog. Problem #1: Avoiding the social eating. Everyone wants to celebrate with food. Birthdays, holidays, because it’s Monday…or it’s Taco Tuesday, means there’s always some social event to celebrate WITH…

Veggie tots, what’s the deal?

Veggie tots, what’s the deal?

If you follow me on Instagram stories (you totally should, username is webeatfat1) you have seen I’ve been trying out the veggie tots. I thought I should take one for the team so you don’t have to spend $3.50 if you don’t want to take the chance. Don’t worry, I’m going to answer the big question: I tried two versions of the veggie tots: broccoli and cauliflower veggie tots. FYI: These are not adult foods. This is a way for adults to sneak veggies to their kids and think nothing about it. I’m not saying adults won’t enjoy them, but…

Five Things Friday: finally blogging edition

Five Things Friday: finally blogging edition

I feel like I’m sneaking to blog.  It’s in the wee hours of the morning but I need to get this in.  Last week I made the mistake of blogging about nonsense and then the baby woke up so I didn’t get to finish the post.  It’s sad, but I’m already wasting time.  Let’s get with it: Running.  I’m starting to get back into it.  I’ve gone back to it and things are so much better. Granted, I’m a wee bit slower (like almost 4 minutes a mile slower) than what I use to be, but I’ll get back there.…

Do calorie counts on menus matter?

Do calorie counts on menus matter?

There’s a new trend popping up on menus everywhere.  Have you seen it? The days of having to look up the calorie counts for a specific restaurant are over because it’s right there next to the entree you want to order.  And restaurants are even pointing out their low-cal options on the menu. It’s a great thing for people who are calorie conscious and still want to eat out.  Things have changed greatly from when we started our weight loss journey. Do those calorie counts on menus matter? I know when I look at a menu and see the calorie…
