Don’t feed your emotions

Emotions are a crazy thing and will make people do crazy things. I fed my emotions when I was having the best and worst days of my life. I rewarded myself with decadent meals starting with an appetizer or two all the way to dessert. I didn’t need self control because I was celebrating whatever I thought was the milestones. Sometimes it would be just making it through a stressful day and coming out unscathed at the end. Little every day things became big things to celebrate. When I was having a bad day, I turned to fried foods and…

Don’t be afraid of strength training

Don’t be afraid of strength training

When I first started exercising I avoided strength training and just concentrated on cardio. I stayed away from strength training, like many others, because I thought strength training would make me bigger. Also, I shied away from it because I didn’t know where to begin and feared I would my hurt myself if I added it into my routine. For the first 13 months of my weight loss journey, I avoided weight training until I started researching what I needed for well-rounded workouts. I hired a trainer for a once a week session for four weeks and learned a lot…

Our open letter to Subway:

Our open letter to Subway:

Dear Subway: We love you Subway because you allow me to eat fresh on the go! You’re our go-to meal when we travel the roads because we still need to be healthy when we’re away from my home. Subway has been a huge part of our weight loss success and we will own up to that. We may not be Jared, but we have our own weight loss story which Subway helped us along the way too. (May I mention that we love that most Subways are open late too! Angela recently got herself into a pickle while traveling, but…

Foodie Friday: Easy steel cut oats for breakfast

Foodie Friday: Easy steel cut oats for breakfast

Breakfast is a very sensitive subject for me. I know people who go without it but I’m not one of those people. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I don’t think anyone should ever go without it! When I was floating on the heavier side, one of my biggest problems was not eating. I would go all day and not eat until 4 pm so when it was time it eat I was starving. That meant I would eat anything and everything. That was a huge problem in itself but I was also really messing up…

Our weight loss tool: LoseIt!

Our weight loss tool: LoseIt!

Lose It! has been the main phone app we have used to lose weight. This app is not only a way for individuals to keep track of their diet and exercises routines but this is the app we used in our weight loss journey.  An August 2010 study by Kaiser Permanente shows people who logged their food in a food diary were more likely to lose weight AND keep it off! “This study shows that if people use quality weight management websites consistently, and if they stick with their program, they are more likely to keep their weight off,” said…

We have goals: April 2013

We have goals: April 2013

March was a great month for us. We met some great people and have had a chance to share our story with all you. We are blessed! Everyone has a story BUT not everyone gets the chance to share his or her story with the world. We don’t think we are special or did something that someone else hasn’t already accomplished but our situation is different because someone found this blog. One CNN article put us in the spotlight to inspire and motivate others to lose weight and move to a healthier lifestyle. With that being said, we wouldn’t be…

Foodie Friday: Low Fat Banana Bread

Foodie Friday: Low Fat Banana Bread

Whenever we have company, this is my go to recipe for my banana loving friends and family. I always want to show people you can still indulge without really breaking your nutritional bank! This banana bread is great and you can add whatever you want to it. I don’t like nuts, but nuts or other dried fruits (raisins, cranberries, apricots) would be delicious! Now this isn’t something we have every day or even every month. It’s a treat for us. Watch your portions and your sugar and this can be a treat you can enjoy too! Author: Angela Cook time:…

Why wait? Start your new routine today.

Why wait? Start your new routine today.

“I’m going to start my new diet and workout routine on Monday.” This is a statement that many people including myself have uttered at one time or another. Sometime during the week before, we make a conscious effort to get our plan in place. We write out what we’re going to do and what we can and can’t eat. We’re excited and are so ready for that upcoming Monday. My question to you is: Why wait until Monday? There’s six other days of the week. Any day is the “perfect” day to make a plan of action. Start today if…

2:13:50 – My first Rock N Roll race

2:13:50 – My first Rock N Roll race

My Rock n Roll Dallas experience was amazing.  I was really hesitant about running this race because the Gusher was just two weeks before.  I had never run two half marathons that close to each other and I was just afraid to commit, but I’m glad that I did. After the Gusher, my knee was bothering me and I got worried about not being able to run in Dallas.  I did small short runs, became really great friends with my foam roller and did lots and lots of stretching.  I even cut back on teaching my spin classes (I like…

What we look for in nutritional information

What we look for in nutritional information

The first question people always ask is about what we eat.  What we is important, but I think the real question should be how much do you eat.  Portion control is something everyone struggles with, even if you don’t realize it.  The rest of the world labels Americans as hungry because we’re always eating…and overeating.  That portion on your plate at your favorite restaurant is more than likely two servings of food, but most people eat the whole plate without even thinking of that. We are constantly asked about what we eat when we are out and our response is…

Talk about a crazy day! We had no idea the CNN story would cause this much buzz and definitely wasn’t something we were looking for by talking about our journey. Did you see they did a small bit on the actual news channel too? I missed it, but I heard all about it. Willie and I are not the type of people to seek attention. I originally started the blog because people were asking so many questions, I just wanted a place to put it down so I didn’t have to keep repeating myself. The only thing we ever wanted…
