HELP! I need to lose weight.

Every time Willie and I end up in the media, the Facebook and e-mail messages start rolling in with people saying the same thing.  “HELP! I need to lose weight.  Please tell me what to do.” I try to read the messages but honestly it’s just a lot of messages saying the same thing.  Reading the messages makes me feel helpless and at a loss for words because I don’t really know what to say.  Correction:  I know what to say but I know that’s not what you want to hear.

I am not an expert on weight loss.  I’m just another person who struggled with their weight and with the support of my best friend and husband, we lost a combined total of 500 pounds!  We didn’t follow a plan.  It was simply stop eating all the bad stuff and get active more!

The one thing I know about weight loss is it takes a certain will power and determination to really make it work.  If you have to lose a great amount of weight you have to really want it!  It will consume you and it will become you. Losing weight was the single most important thing in our lives.  It was the first thing we thought about in the morning and the last thing before bed.  It was almost every conversation in our world.  We knew we had to push past many hurdles and obstacles and we were DETERMINED to do it!

Remember: it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change! That means you have to change your habits.  That sometimes means you have to cut people out of your life. Yes, you might have to sever relationships with people who won’t support you; people who might want to sabotage you. That means you might have to miss out on some social things, because we all know eating is a social behavior.  That means time usually spent watching television will be spent at the gym or being active.  That means waking up earlier or staying out later in the evening might be something you have to do.  It might mean spending an afternoon prepping food for the week instead of the convenience of eating out. The one thing I know is: it means you life has to change to move into a better future.

So you want to lose the weight? You have to want it and you need to find out as much as you can about making it work for you.  What worked for me, may not work for you! I fell in love with being an endurance athlete, you may decide that you want to dance your booty off in Zumba!  You have to eat right and get active, but you also have to remember the 80/20 rule of life. Just because you work out, doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want!  Stop with the fast food and soda and get with whole foods and water! That’s the first step! Learn how to grocery shop the right way.

I have linked to some of the most important posts on losing weight on the blog throughout this post.  Please take the time to look around the blog and just read.  It’s more about eating and working out because there’s a whole emotional aspect to it all.  I try to be as honest and open about it as I can.  It’s not easy but it’s not hard either.  But please remember, what worked for us may not work for you.  It’s a learning process and you have to do what works for you!

I hope this helps with all the questions!  From here, if you need to vent please e-mail me and I will respond! I can’t tell you how to lose the weight, but I can motivate you by telling my story and experience.  I can’t tell you how to eat healthy, but I can help you with the things I learned.  Willie and I just did good ole fashion research when we didn’t know the answers.  Please remember it’s a learning process that takes a while to get use to.  Results will not happen immediately, but the results will come if you keep with it! I promise!

Interesting read about calories and strength training

Interesting read about calories and strength training

When we started the weight loss journey it was all about calories.  We counted those suckers like we counted pennies out at the register.  We used Lose It! to help track our calorie intake.  In the beginning we had a lot of calories to eat, but as the weight came off the calories we were allowed inched down.  I remember the day my calories reached 1300.  I remember struggling during that time because working out as much as I did and just eating 1300 calories wasn’t working. My friend Aimee posted a link from Sophieologie about 1200 calories and I…

Motivation Monday to get back on track

Motivation Monday to get back on track

It’s Monday and all the blogs I read do motivation Monday. I don’t really do that because everyone else is doing it. Today, I needed a little motivation. I’ve been off track. I haven’t felt like myself and I know I haven’t been holding myself accountable. I’ve been stuck in a rut because I’ve been resting for the marathon and then I ran another marathon two weeks later. It’s really left me feeling weird because I’ve been in a constant taper. My working out was limited…and I felt the need to carbo load. In New Orelans all I ate the…

Playing catch up

Playing catch up

I’ve seriously fallen behind in life since Willie has been sick. Last week I split my time between the hospital, work and home.  I was totally out of my routine.  I didn’t get to work out that much and I was seriously tired.  No matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to get some sleep.  I know a lot of it was stress induced, but I was really really tired.  Good thing Willie’s hospital visit occurred the week after the marathon because I probably needed to rest days. The one thing I learned is the hospital doesn’t really serve healthy…

Tips to avoid the new work out burn …

Tips to avoid the new work out burn out

It’s the beginning of the year and a LOT of people have resolved to get fit. That’s how the year always starts off right? People flocking to the gym, getting gym memberships and flaking out come February. Those people never see the gym until January of the following year when they plan to do it all over again. All I have to say is: the treadmills and elliptical are packed at my gym around 5:30pm! On a side note, don’t be mean to the new people at the gym.  These people are coming to the gym to accomplish the same…

Taper makes me think

Taper makes me think

Today I was on the phone with a friend and they asked, “What’s the good word?” The good word is taper.  For all those who don’t know, taper happens close to a race where you scale back your mileage so you can rest up and recover for the race.  Taper is a good and bad thing.  It’s good because I won’t be running mega miles on the weekend but it bad because I’m not focused on running the mega mileage on the weekend.  It leaves room to think about other things. The thing that’s been on my mind lately is…

A new year of goals

A new year of goals

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2014 and all that comes with it.  Last year was great but I want to make this year even better. I started off my morning with a 7.70 mile run.  If I would have known I was that close to 8 miles I would have kept going. We ran the resolution run with our friends to start off the year. I ran a little over 3 miles before we left home to meet the running group. I did a little bit more before the running group started and finished with the group. To my surprise,…

Stopping the bad talk

Stopping the bad talk

This weekend was a supposed to be a time for rest.  It was supposed to be a time to relax so we went to visit a cute little girl and her family.  There was lots of princess talk and it was fun.  The infamous godchild is a big of ball of cuteness and fun. I also had my first visit to Charming Charlie.  It is like a SPARKLY RAINBOW EXPLODED in the store.  My mind was on overdrive the entire time I was in there.  I couldn’t focus on just one thing.  It was hard for me to found something…

Christmas is over…

Christmas is over…

Christmas was pretty chill for us. We agreed to keep the gift giving to a minimum because we tend to go overboard. I got Willie a head light, Clif Bars and a cold weather pull over. He got me a BOX of Quest Bars and some chap stick. I’m a happy girl. I also got some airline giftcards (cause you know I’m always moving)!  I’m planning out 2014 as I type this…lots of travel to be happening I hope! We went to my sister’s house for Christmas. I wanted to get a good picture by the tree and Willie though…

A Christmas light bike ride

A Christmas light bike ride

Last night, Willie and I went on a Christmas light bike ride.  We wanted to do it last year but we didn’t.  I don’t remember why but it probably had something to do with the social aspect of ride.  We just didn’t know anyone and it never occurred to us to just go out there to meet people.  This year we were all game for it though.  So yesterday I taught my 4:30 cycle class and then we headed out after for the 9 mile bike ride to see the Christmas lights. You know what I loved about it? 1.…

Dealing with maintenance mode

Dealing with maintenance mode

People are very curious to see if I’m still trying to lose weight.  I am here to answer that question: no! I’m in maintenance mode and I’ve been that way for almost two years now, I think.  Two years seems like a really long time.  It took me 13 months to hit my first goal weight and I continued to shed the pounds after that, not intentionally but I did still have more to lose.  At some point my body just stopped and that is how I knew it was time to maintain. It was a hard switch to make…
