Setbacks of weight loss

Weight loss is a tricky thing.  The people who need to lose weight seek it out.  It’s the goal, it’s a state of mind.  Weight loss is your best friend and biggest motivator when everything is going right and your biggest enemy when you just can’t pull it together.  “What works for one person will not work for another,” is what I’m always telling people when they asked what I did to lose weight.  That’s the truth, before, during and after weight loss.

Many of you have asked about Willie and his lack of presence and I’ve kind of just avoided the question.  It’s not really my story to tell but I don’t want to keep pushing it aside because I didn’t know how to answer those questions.  This is We Beat Fat.  Willie and I decided long ago this blog is more journey but there is still a WE here that I feel the need to address.  This is his story to share but it’s our journey to to tell.  So…

Willie has suffered some setbacks of weight loss and it’s been hard for me to watch and even harder for him to deal with. It’s been hard watching the weight gain and even harder watching him struggle.  We have some suspicions on why he’s gained some weight but that’s just one part of the answer.  I’m sure there was a little bit of complacency in the situation and just wanting to do some new things. He’s committing to get back on track and losing the weight that he has gained. Gaining the weight back is the biggest fear of anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight.  I know this is a very scary time for Willie.

He's up and eating! The patient is on the mend! He’s been here before and he knows what it takes to lose the weight.  Having his gallbladder removed last year was just a setback that no one really explained to us.  He didn’t know there would be any effects that would lead to this.  His body just can’t process fat the same way anymore and he’s learning his new normal now.

There have been some strained conversations in our house and it hasn’t been easy.  All I want to do is help him get back to the place he wants to be.  All I can do is support him on his new journey.

Look who decided to come to my class this morning! @fueledxrunning is changing up his #workout to get back on track. His #weightlossjourney begins again and he's focused. I'll talk more about it in the blog today! #weightlossjourney #weightloss #webeatfat

Willie stopped cut down on his cardio to focus on his weight training.  He loves his weight training but this is a classic example of what works for one person might not work for another.  Willie might be learning that his cardio is just as important as his weight training to HELP him keep his weight off. He’s making improvements already; he came to my cycle class yesterday!

That’s what is up with Willie and I hope that you can all understand his struggle and will support him on his new weight loss journey.  There is so much more to be said, but I only know what I know and see.  I just wanted to share with everyone what has been going on with us and how we are going to do this together.  I’ve been hitting the gym with him, giving him encouragement and focusing on tightening up the day to day diet.  He’s getting back into running so I’ll be helping him out with that too.

The lifestyle change is DIFFERENT for EVERYONE

The lifestyle change is DIFFERENT for EVERYONE

It’s different for everyone and it’s going to change over time.  Keep that in mind.  I’ve said it many many times.  The journey I took is different from the one Willie took and will be different from the one many people take. A lifestyle change is about developing new habits.  In our case, our lifestyle change was about developing HEALTHIER habits than what we did before.  McDonald’s drive thru and movie marathons for the weekend soon became weekend running and enjoying a good healthy meal. Losing 100+ pounds takes time and commitment.  That has to come from within yourself. No…

Dealing with maintenance mode

Dealing with maintenance mode

People are very curious to see if I’m still trying to lose weight.  I am here to answer that question: no! I’m in maintenance mode and I’ve been that way for almost two years now, I think.  Two years seems like a really long time.  It took me 13 months to hit my first goal weight and I continued to shed the pounds after that, not intentionally but I did still have more to lose.  At some point my body just stopped and that is how I knew it was time to maintain. It was a hard switch to make…

What did you eat to lose all that …

What did you eat to lose all that weight?

This week I’m taking the time to answer the many e-mails I get about our weight loss journey.  Most of the questions are the same, but this question is the most frequently asked question.  Before I venture any more into this subject, I want to remind everyone that it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change.  Also, there wasn’t one magic food that changed our lives and helped us drop the weight.  The weight didn’t come off overnight because it was a process. The easiest way to answer this question is to tell you what we stopped eating.  We stopped…

Froyo, I’m going to quit you!

Froyo, I’m going to quit you!

Froyo (aka frozen yogurt) is my thing.  When I was larger, I would sit down with quarts of ice cream and devour them while watching television…along with a McDonalds 20 pack of chicken nuggets, two double cheeseburgers, large fries and just for my own health, a medium order of fries too.  Not my healthiest moment, eh? But froyo was/is my trip off the beaten path in our new lifestyle change. I can eat my weight in froyo, run a half marathon and come back for more.  (You definitely know what I’ll be eating AFTER I finish my first marathon.) My…
