How to Overcome Insecurity During Your Workouts

Embarking on a fitness journey can be an empowering and transformative experience. However, the journey is not always smooth, and insecurities about our bodies or abilities can cast a shadow on our motivation. To a degree, nearly everyone battles insecurities, but when it comes to exercising, it’s almost counterintuitive if you think about it. You do this to better yourself, to improve your health, to become more agile, and the endorphins, too, of course! 

Overcome Insecurity During Your Workouts

But at the same time, you might feel nervous or even anxious. What if people are watching? What if you’re not doing it right? What causes uneven abs? What about jiggles in certain parts of the body? Unflattering face? Too much sweat? 

As you can see, the list goes on and on! You should feel good when doing this; you should feel like you can take on the world, that you are the world, even when exercising. Your mind shouldn’t be getting in the way of your body improving itself, and it shouldn’t get in the way of feeling good. 

For the most part, tackling this truly is easier said than done. But you can still overcome this insecurity. After all, you need to benefit from and maximize your exercises, and stress from lack of confidence is far from helpful. So, whether you’re stepping into a gym for the first time, pushing your limits at home, or everything in between, here are some strategies for helping you fight insecurity and foster a positive mindset during your workouts!

You Have to Shift Your Focus

Bluntly put, you don’t have a choice, as this is one of the only ways to overcome it and fight back. So, instead of fixating on perceived flaws or insecurities, redirect your attention to the positive aspects of your fitness journey. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and focus on the strength and resilience you’re building with each workout.

Consider a Supportive Environment

No matter what, you should always surround yourself with a supportive network. This could be a workout buddy, a fitness class, or an online community; having people who uplift and encourage you can significantly impact your confidence. It would help if you also tried to share your insecurities, and you’ll likely find that you’re not alone in your feelings. Seriously, this will make all the difference! 

You Need Some Self-Compassion

You seriously need to treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Everyone starts somewhere, and progress is a journey, not a destination. Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations that reinforce your capabilities and resilience. Give yourself the love and compassion you’d give to everyone else.

Focus on the Function of Fitness

Why not instead think about the function that fitness provides? So, shift the focus of your workouts towards functional fitness and how your body feels rather than solely on appearance. It’s just best to celebrate the increased energy, stamina, and improved mood that regular exercise brings, reinforcing the positive impact on your overall well-being.
