Do calorie counts on menus matter?

There’s a new trend popping up on menus everywhere.  Have you seen it?

Do calorie counts really matter?

The days of having to look up the calorie counts for a specific restaurant are over because it’s right there next to the entree you want to order.  And restaurants are even pointing out their low-cal options on the menu. It’s a great thing for people who are calorie conscious and still want to eat out.  Things have changed greatly from when we started our weight loss journey.

Do those calorie counts on menus matter? I know when I look at a menu and see the calorie counts, it really does make me think twice ordering something, but I wonder if it is like that for others? It’s like sticker shock when I see things and it makes me want to find something else. Seeing it on the menu really makes me think twice or four times about putting something in my mouth that I may have to pay for later. In this case, seeing is believing.

Calorie counts on menus

Don’t get me wrong, there are times to indulge and I do but seeing those numbers put things in a whole new perspective. But does that train of thought vary from restaurant to restaurant? I will more likely not pay close attention to the calories on my cheat meal and I’m sitting down at a restaurant vs. driving up to a fast food place.  At fast food establishments, I will likely pass on EVERYTHING all together but if I have to eat something (when road tripping or regular travel) I will go for the least offensive item on the menu.

For some people, they just won’t care.  Those are just more numbers on the menu. For some, it might be better to just ignore those numbers and just eat the meal.  Some people may not really understand what those numbers really mean.  It’s just a matter of personal preference.  Are those numbers only there for the people who are health conscious?

I really like this new trend because it helps me better decide on what to get when eating out.  It allows me to be social and not stuck in the health hole of only eating a salad when going out.  But it also magnifies all the things I shouldn’t even think about eating and puts a bigger spotlight on how few things there are to eat on certain menus.  More restaurants are moving toward “healthier” and “lighter” options to choose from too.  As much as I like salad, I don’t want to eat it every time I go out.  Plus, some salads have more calories and fat than some of the regular menu items.

More restaurants are moving toward “healthier” and “lighter” options to choose from too.  As much as I like salad, I don’t want to eat it every time I go out.  Plus, some salads have more calories and fat than some of the regular menu items.  That’s why it’s always smart to check out the FULL nutritional information on a food establishments website because that WILL NOT be printed on the menu.  Calories are just one part of the story.

Things are not normal

Things are not normal

The best blogs are the ones when you write about what you know so that is what I have to write about right now.  Things are not normal right now.  I wish I could blog about workouts, meal prepping and healthy meals, or even just weight loss.  But I can’t do that because life is just different right now. I am extremely blessed to have a child.  She is my world and I’m thankful every minute of the day.  This is definitely a place in life I never thought I would be.  Honestly, I had given up the possibility of…

Catching up: the anniversaries and baby

Catching up: the anniversaries and baby

I’m barely keeping things together.  Having a new baby is challenging.  It’s not so much the sleep thing that is getting me, it’s the everything else.  Changing of the diapers, feeding and just making sure she’s content are the hard parts for me.  That’s the biggest adjustment in my life. Plus, I’ve been having to do work in the in-between times which is something I didn’t think I would have to do.  But I still have to pay the bills, right? I am learning that I need to make some time for myself.  There’s a lot of learning going on…

The time I grew a human

The time I grew a human

Things happened very quickly and I really thought I was going to have another week to work on my blog. Last week things went very different than I imagined, but the best part was meeting my baby girl. That’s right, I grew a human and I finally got to meet her last week. She’s perfect! We are doing well and so thankful for everything. I’m on a workout break which is going to be something hard for me to deal with. This will be the longest period of time that I haven’t worked out since I started my weight loss…

Friday Five: Turkey burgers, headbands, working out & more

Happy Friday!  I hope all is well in the world with you.  I felt like I had a really productive morning but then the afternoon seems a little less eventful.  I guess you could say I spent it on the couch sleeping. I thought I should sit down and blog since I’m feeling up to it and I’m well rested. So there’s a blog and some hot chocolate…and here I am. I think it’s a good way to spend a Friday. 1. Today I’m officially 38 weeks which means our baby girl should be making her grand debut soon.  FYI:…

Enjoy your Thanksgiving

Enjoy your Thanksgiving

It’s Thanksgiving week so that means family gatherings, football and lots of food.  Enjoy your day and don’t sweat the small the stuff.  This should be a day to celebrate and should be stress-free. My day started off with the Turkey Trot.  We all walked the 5K. I’ve written about Thanksgiving in the past and posted healthy side dishes.  If there are healthy options at your table then eat them and enjoy them.  If you feel like you need to provide those side dishes, then eat up and enjoy them. I just want everyone to enjoy the time.  I feel…

Making the sugar-free cake

Making the sugar-free cake

I posted last night on Facebook that I was making this Warm Winter Lemon Cake (click the words because they are a link; I just don’t know why it doesn’t light up.).  I’ve made this cake before, I’ve just never done a sugar-free cake version.  I know what the finished product is supposed to look like. I used a Pillsbury boxed yellow sugar-free cake and sugar-free Jello lemon pudding.  I followed the directions just like they said and this is what I ended up with.  It’s not bad, it’s just not what is supposed to happen.  The pudding is supposed…

Motivation Monday: Concentrate on what you have

Motivation Monday: Concentrate on what you have

Happy Monday!  I hope things are starting off right for you today.  This post will be short but I wanted to share with you a message of concentrating on what you have and value your worth.  I’ve gone through a period of time of not realizing my worth and questioning things that haven’t happened in my life.  What I’ve learned is that is a waste of time.  Don’t make that mistake. It’s important to be thankful for everything that you are and currently possess instead of longing for the things you are not and don’t have. Those things will come…

Thinking out loud about words and respect

Thinking out loud about words and respect

It’s been a very serious week in our country so today I decided to go back to the Thinking Out Loud.  I want to preface this post with these words:  this is not a political post.  This is a post about respect. Social media has given us all a voice and sometimes I think it’s a bad thing.  People express opinions that maybe don’t need to be expressed or just say the first thing that comes to their minds.  It’s unsettling because all of this is said behind a electronic screen and I don’t always think those words would be…

Happy Halloween and the Corner Store Run

Happy Halloween and the Corner Store Run

I’m not really a big fan of Halloween.  I don’t like dressing up and I’m not a huge fan of candy.  I never really enjoyed it as a young child either.  I don’t like to be scared or spooked and I know that’s only one side of the holiday.  It’s just not for me.  I love others enjoy it but it’s really not the thing for me.  I must be hard wired wrong or something, right?  Maybe this will change in the future, but I may be growing a child that might not like it either. Maybe I’m just bitter…

Friday Five: Running, baby and everything else

Friday Five: Running, baby and everything else

Hey everyone! It’s been a long week and I’ve spent most of it working, eating or sleeping. I’ve become the most uninteresting person in the world. I had big plans for the blog this week and I missed my Thursday blogging. I’m trying to get at least 3 days a week on the blog so I’ll be making up for that right now. The sleeping has been so bad this week that I put an air mattress to sleep on at work during my break. I haven’t done a Friday Five in a long time and I should probably get…
