Reasons to slow down while eating

Yesterday, I was traumatized because I saw my life flashing before my eyes.  I simply wanted to eat lunch with my daughter and it turned into a nightmare situation.

I got some food stuck in my throat.  I could still breathe and mumble a bit, but I knew it was just a matter of seconds before those positive things would turn into a negative. I really thought I was going to die and it scared the crap of me.  There were many things that ran through my mind, but they all revolved around my sweet baby girl.

Eventually, the food (carrots) became dislodged and there was a lot of vomiting involved, but I lived to share this tale with you.

Slow down and eat your food. I was trying to take care of my child and answering some work e-mails at the same time and thinking of things I needed to do when I left the restaurant.  Most of the time, I am the last person still eating at the table but yesterday was different for some reason.  Maybe I was just really hungry?

I’ve been a sprint eater since having a child.  There are moments when I do eat quickly so I can take care of her or move on to the next thing.  Sometimes a calm situation will turn into a s$%! storm in a matter of seconds so I’m trying to stay on top of it.  But yesterday I learned that I need to slow down and really just pay attention.

Here are some helpful and healthy things to help in a situation like this:

  1. Make time to eat.  Having a schedule break for your meals ensures you are making time to eat and putting yourself in a rushed situation.  Set aside 15-20 minutes to have your meals.
  2. Chew your food.  This may sound simple and common sense but of course, some foods need more chews than others.  A bite of mashed potatoes isn’t the same as munching on green beans or carrots.
  3. Drink water while you’re eating.  This will slow you down to stop to drink.  This will help you with not overeating, too.
  4. Cut the distractions.  Get off the phone, don’t get distracted by the television or the people around you.

Also, when you’re slowing down while eating, you’re allowing for better digestion of your food.  I’m sure someone would want me to bring this back to weight loss or healthy living so here you go.  When you eat fast, it takes your brain a long time to realize that you’re full so you might eat more than what you actually need.  Slowing down while eating can save your life but can also help you manage your weight because you’re taking the time to chew and process your food.

Don’t make my mistakes and almost lose your life because you’re trying to shove food in your mouth.

Are you a fast or slow eater?
