Air fryer chicken wings

Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone but I’m still thinking about those chicken wings I made in my air fryer. (Yes, I’m still in love with my air fryer and I think everyone should get one.) I love buffalo wings but I don’t like the fried aspect behind it. I’m always trying to find ways to make things a little bit healthier for my life so I thought I would try buffalo wings for the big day.

I’ve been craving wings for a long time but I just don’t want to go out to get them.  I’m not sure if it’s worth it for my cheat meal.  But there’s not like a good beer and some buffalo wings to watch the biggest football game of the year, right?

I didn’t do anything really fancy for my wings but I want to share my chicken wing air fryer experience.  I haven’t cooked a lot of meats in my air fryer and when I have it’s been chicken breast.  The air fryer does dry out the chicken breast and I didn’t know if it was going to do that with the wings.  I used wings and drumettes and I tried to trim as much of the skin off as I could. The skin is where all the fat and calories live.

I did marinate the wings in low-fat buttermilk overnight just to make sure the wings weren’t too dry. It’s just a marinade and you end up throwing most of it out anyway.

Now, this is where I’m going to show I wasn’t fancy.  I used McCormick spice packets to season in a bag and I put the wings in the air fryer for 22 minutes. I made four batches of wings so I was at it for a little more than an hour.

The wings looked pretty good without the sauce.

After the wings were cooked, I shook them in a container with the buffalo or parmesan garlic sauce.  I don’t recommend shaking though.  It worked much better when I used the spin method.  I was actually surprised at how little sauce I used.  I made a lot of wings and I think I only used 4 tablespoons of each sauce.  Some people like their wings saucy, so you might want to use more than I did.

I also used premade sauces which I didn’t mind because I didn’t use that much.  Sometimes it’s just better to take the shortcut. What I love about the air fryer is all the fat falls below the basket so your food isn’t sitting in fat.  It’s definitely a calorie saving but not sacrificing the flavor investment.

In the end, I didn’t eat that much because I spent a big chunk of time making the wings.  If I had a bigger air fryer, this wouldn’t have been a problem.  There are bigger air fryers on the market now, but I usually don’t make this large amount of food.

The wings turned out great though.  I could have done a better job of trimming the fat. The wings tasted like something you would get at a restaurant and were crispy. I think this is a great way to enjoy the wings you love without having all the fried fat. Just remember to spin the wings and not shake them and enjoy it all!

Do you like buffalo wings as much as me?  Are you traditional or do you enjoy other sauces?
